Moray eel enjoying a lion fish snack for lunch.
The question is often asked, why would you hunt and kill a lion fish. Though they may be beautiful, the lion fish is an invasive species in the Caribbean that decimates reefs because of its voracious appetite. It has no natural predator and the female can lay thousands of eggs every 3-4 days. They can reduce the reef fish population up to 79% which threatens the marine ecosystem. Because of this, lion fish are killed to bring balance back. Here you see our dive master feeding a moray eel a lion fish he killed. Eels will not go after a live lion fish naturally so they mimic a live fish in hopes that the eel will eventually learn to be a predator!
