Better Than a Sports Car!

The customer hasn't even seen it in person yet, but this gorgeous custom walnut Petrof upright piano is heading to its new home in South Dakota. When we were finalizing everything, he told me it came down to a choice between buying this piano or a sports car. His verdict? "It was this all the way. I'm way more excited to have this than I ever could be about a sports car." I couldn't agree more. We can't wait to see his reaction when it finally arrives!

What does it actually take to rebuild a 160-year-old Montana Heirloom 1867 Steinway Grand Piano? 🎹

In our latest video, we walk through the fascinating process of soundboard rebuilding, bridge cap replacement, precision drilling, and CNC-assisted restoration work.

From massive cracks to beautifully refinished bridges, this is the kind of craftsmanship that brings historic pianos back to life.

You won't believe this is the same piano.

This 1895 Alabama family heirloom arrived at our shop covered in a worn green finish that concealed the beautiful natural wood beneath. But restoring its appearance was only part of the journey.

Inside, this Knabe upright required extensive rebuilding, including bridge cap restoration, soundboard repairs, and the renewal of worn components throughout the piano.

The result is a remarkable transformation—bringing back both the beauty and musical performance of this 130-year-old instrument. What was once a tired antique is now a treasured family heirloom ready for generations to come.

This beautiful 1905 Mason & Hamlin upright has over 120 years of history behind it. Ideally, a piano of this age would undergo a complete restoration — but in this case, our goal is something a little different: carefully refurbishing the piano to preserve as many original parts as possible while giving it renewed life for the next decade or two.

Rather than replacing everything, we’ll be restoring and improving the components that can still serve this instrument well. The work will include:

🎹 Reconditioning the original keys
🎹 Replacing worn key bushings
🎹 Reshaping the hammers
🎹 Thorough internal cleaning
🎹 Replacing bridal straps
🎹 Regulation, voicing, alignment, and tuning

Structurally, this piano is in encouraging condition for its age — the soundboard is free of major cracks, and the bridges show no significant issues. While this refurbishment won’t bring the piano to its absolute full potential, it will dramatically improve the touch, tone, stability, and longevity of the instrument while honoring its original character.

We’re excited to share the transformation as this heirloom piano begins its next chapter. 🎹

The piano teacher said, “Get a Yamaha U1.” 🎹

There’s a reason we hear that all the time. The Yamaha U1 has earned its reputation as one of the most trusted upright pianos ever built — reliable, durable, and incredibly consistent.

This 1986 Yamaha U1A (48") in polished black just completed a full refurbishing in our piano shop, including regulation, hammer reshaping, alignment, lubrication, cleaning, and detailed action work throughout. It looks nearly brand new and plays beautifully.

What I especially love about this particular U1 is the tone. Fantastic touch, beautiful tone, legendary reliability — and at a fraction of the cost of a new U1.

Come try it for yourself at Brigham Larson Pianos in Orem, Utah.

We honestly did NOT expect this antique German upright to turn out this good.

This rare Friedrich Prein family heirloom piano from Nevada came into the shop with:
🎹 A failing pinblock
🎹 Large soundboard cracks
🎹 Bridge damage
🎹 An antiquated birdcage action
🎹 Serious structural challenges

Using CNC machining and a LOT of precision work, we were able to repair the upright pinblock.

After rebuilding the action, repairing the soundboard, installing a new bridge cap, and carefully regulating the entire piano, the result completely exceeded our expectations.

In fact, this may be the best birdcage-action upright we’ve ever heard.

These old family heirloom pianos still have amazing potential when restored properly.

Watch the final result and hear how this 100+ year old German piano sounds today.

This is why I love satin pianos. 🎹

This 1980 Young Chang G-185 (6'1") just completed a full refurbishing and refinishing in our piano shop — and it turned out beautifully. The satin finish gives it such a classy, understated look, and the touch has that rich, “dig into it” feel that serious pianists love.

Inside, we went through the entire action: reshaping hammers, regulation, lubrication, voicing, repinning, alignment — the works. It now plays and responds like a completely refreshed instrument, ready for another couple decades of music-making.

Big tone. Smooth touch. Gorgeous satin cabinet. And all at a fraction of the cost of a comparable new grand piano.

Come play it for yourself at Brigham Larson Pianos in Orem, Utah.
