Oh no! You’ve found a baby bird on the ground, apparently alone and in distress. 🐥 Its tiny chirps may pull at your heartstrings, and it can be tempting to spring into action—but, not all baby birds need rescuing. That's why it's so important to stop and assess the situation.

If they do need your help, how to help them depends on a few factors: does this bird need immediate medical attention? And is it a nestling or a fledgling? Take a look at this graphic to determine how and when to assist baby birds—then click the link in our comments to learn more!

Camp Wildernest Wildlife Center, Inc. Is our areas ONLY songbird rehabilitator! If you find any injured birds this season please reach out to them. ALL window strikes should be taken in, even if they seem to recover, because they can have internal bleeding that may show up later after they have flown away.
Follow their page so you have access to their contact information should you need them.

Over the weekend, we released 61 birds!! 🕊️ What an incredible way to end the week!

Each release is a second chance at life—and watching them take that first flight never gets old. 💚

Every spring I see the red nectar bottles on store shelves and I just have to say something. 🙏

The dye is not necessary. Hummingbirds are attracted to the red parts of the feeder — the ports, the base, the flowers. They do not need red liquid.

And there's growing evidence that artificial red dye (Red Dye No. 40) may be harmful to them. It's simply not worth the risk.

The recipe is embarrassingly simple:
→ 1 cup white granulated sugar
→ 4 cups water
→ Stir or boil until dissolved
→ Cool completely before filling
→ Refrigerate the rest for up to a week

Change it every 3–5 days in warm weather. Every 2 days when it's hot. Mold and fermentation happen fast.

Clear nectar. Clean feeder. Happy hummingbird. That's the whole system.
