It is with tremendous sadness that we tell our supporters that we have lost our precious Sanctuary Sweetheart, Hero.
Hero was brought to the HUA shelter on May 5th, 2013. He was a year and a half old at that time, and he had been in three homes. He was carried in wrapped in a blanket because he could barely walk. His back legs didn’t function well at all, and sometimes he tried to walk on his front lets only. We were told that he may have been kicked in the head. He could not see, and he had a hard time finding his food because he could not smell either. We were told that he had to drink in a bathtub or sink with running water to be able to find the water.
This pitiful tiny Yorkie weighed only 5 pounds, and he was totally adorable, but he would suddenly become very agitated and fiercely bite anything in his path, including any people. His teeth were quite sharp, too. So we learned fast to watch out for his fits.
Hero lived in the main building at the HUA shelter for six years in a room next door to the office known as Hero’s Room. He had a faithful lady Chihuahua named Porsche who acted as his mother and was always seen ushering him around. They slept together in two little dog beds and were always seen exercising together, walking up and down the main hall.
Hero loved to go for rides in a little dog stroller that was considered mostly his. When riding along the shelter lane, he became annoyed if his caregiver stopped for any brief time because he really loved to move.
Almost every guest at the shelter made his acquaintance, and everyone wanted to pet this darling little Yorkie, but they all had to be warned that he could really land a bite.
Hero passed away on the evening of November 15, 2019, while under the excellent care of Urgent Pet Care in Papillion, NE. His little heart just gave out at that time. Rest soundly, our darling little Hero. We miss you terribly.
