SONGS
Morning songs are best, said the sparrow
before the sun is high and our eyes are bright
and the evening's frightful dark has fled.
Evening songs are best, said the nighthawk
at the end of the day with sunset in the sky when
the fattest insects come out to fly in the dusk.
Midnight songs are best, said the great horned owl
when the light has gone and all is silent but for my call and
furry small suppers scurry through the tall grass.
To sing a song is best, said the wind
whether day or night or in between the songs we sing
sing of things we've been and sights we’ve seen, yes
just to sing a song is best, says the wind.

NOT THE OLD MAN YOU SEE
I am not the old man you see
Here deep inside me I am not
the one you now know
I am the one I was when I knew myself
best long ago when I was much younger and
rest was a four-letter word no
I’m not the same man and can’t remember
Just when I became this stumbling
Sprawling stick leg fence of
cross-eyed staves would my legs
behave better were I a stone wall
no
when a stone falls there’s no easy
up again and through the thickets and thorns
by morn no one can tell anyone once
stood there, played with his sons, laughed
with his friends, his future now turned to soil
sprouting waist high weeds and things grown from
seeds unintentionally sown no master
gardener here just hollow winds and
scarecrows of what once had beens
no
you don’t know me well
hell I don’t even know myself anymore.
