I was out of town on Thursday, visiting bookstores in Georgia and Florida (see next week’s newsletter for a full recap!), and as Kristi and I were sitting down together to begin our Instagram Live on Thursday morning, both our phones started buzzing with bookish friends making sure we had seen the news that Beth Brower had announced the release date of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion Volume 9.
As the buyers for bookstores, believe me when I tell you that more important to us than the news of the release date (as exciting as that is to us as readers) is the announcement that Penguin Random House will now be the publisher of this beloved series. This news is good for us and for you, and we simply must celebrate all of it. The moment we can begin taking pre-orders we will let you know, but for now plan to join us for a come and go scones and tea morning release party on Tuesday February 23rd at 8:30am, at Commonplace Books. -Sarah

Commonplace Books will transform into The Shop Around the Corner with a special storytime, face painting, crafts, carnival games, bouquets of daisies and bouquets of sharpened pencils, and everyone’s favorite trivia scavenger hunt. Did you ever get to meet him or hear him speak? The remembering and visiting will overflow outside as the sun sets, for porch dwell vibes.

We woke this morning to the news of Wendell Berry’s passing from this life, and though we know that he lived a rich and full and long life, our hearts are heavy.

Berry’s writing has always been a part of why we wanted a a bookstore. A Commonplace. “It is not from ourselves that we learn to be better than we are. -Wendell Berry” was painted on the window of our store before books were even on the shelves. His books are in our essay section, poetry, storyteller, and theologian.
Years ago one of our founders got to shake Wendell Berry’s hand, and a friend snapped his picture. He was shaking the hand of his own kind of celebrity/mentor/hero, and Berry in all his humility probably thought something like “I just write what I see as common sense,” thinking it nothing special at all that he used his typewriter to do it.

People love Berry’s fiction, they are challenged by his essays (even sometimes divided by them), and every fall our patrons light a candle in their homes named from a line in his poetry collection. “Timbered Stillness is like Unhurried Wonder in a forest,” the candle makers said. (If you know you know).

“It feels like something grande has ended,” a friend said this morning. That seems a good sentiment. Someone who had beautiful and meaningful words and a kind and thoughtful soul, has left this earth.

Help fill teachers’ classroom libraries before school begins again! We asked Miss Madison, of Harvey Bakery Storytime fame, to get us in touch with some of her teacher friends so we could get book lists from them to pass along. We have made a page on our website that makes shopping for these Moore Public School teachers very easy! Just go to Our Story, and choose Community from the drop down menu. All you have to do is click on a book, purchase from our online store, and we’ll deliver to the teacher! ⁠

Two visits to the New Orleans bookstore Baldwin & Co. in one week, and we are so grateful. Their events are ever revolving, their owner is inspiring, their staff hospitable. Baldwin & Co. is such a pillar in its community, with remarkable intentionality. We left grateful and challenged.
