Why Handmade Soap is Different
Most people don’t realize that a lot of what is sold in stores as “soap” isn’t really soap at all — it’s detergent bars made with synthetic cleansers and hardening agents so they can sit on store shelves for years.
Handmade soap is different.
Real soap is made from oils and lye through a process called saponification, where the oils turn into soap and natural glycerin. That glycerin is one of the reasons handmade soap feels so much gentler and more moisturizing on your skin.
In commercial soap production, the glycerin is often removed and sold separately for lotions and cosmetics. In handmade soap, the glycerin stays right in the bar where it belongs.
Handmade soap is made in small batches, cured slowly, and each bar is cut and handled by hand. It may not be perfectly uniform like factory bars, but that’s part of the charm — and part of what makes it special.
Better ingredients.
Small batches.
Old-fashioned methods.
Soap the way it used to be made.

Front Porch Friday Tip:
Sometimes the best home and garden tricks aren’t new — they’re the ones that have been passed around for years between neighbors, gardeners, and grandmothers. Here’s this week’s Front Porch Friday tip…
After the Rain… Comes the Mosquitoes
This rain we’ve received is wonderful for the grass, the gardens, and the wildflowers…but it also means the mosquitoes are about to move in like they pay rent.
Over the years, I’ve collected a lot of old-fashioned home and garden tricks, and this is one that folks around Oklahoma and Texas have used for a long time. It’s simple, inexpensive, and surprisingly effective for patios and small yards.
It doesn’t kill mosquitoes, but it helps repel them and keep them out of the areas where you want to sit and enjoy the evening.
Old-Fashioned Yard Mosquito Spray
You’ll need:
• 1 large bottle cheap blue mint mouthwash (about 50 oz)
• 3 cups Epsom salt
• 2 stale 12 oz beers (open and let go flat)
• Optional: a few drops lavender and eucalyptus essential oils
Directions:
1. Pour everything into a large bowl.
2. Stir until the Epsom salt dissolves.
3. Use a funnel and pour into spray bottles or a garden sprayer.
4. Spray around the yard, especially: Around patios and porches, Under decks, Around doorways, Around trash cans, Along fence lines, Around flower beds and shrubs, In shady areas where mosquitoes like to hide
Reapply every few weeks or after a heavy rain.
Important Tip: Mosquitoes don’t need a pond to breed. They only need a bottle cap of water.
After a rain, walk around your yard and dump: Buckets, Flowerpot saucers, Kids toys, Wheelbarrows, Old plant pots, Anything holding water
If you dump the standing water and spray the yard, you’ll make a big difference.
Sometimes the best solutions aren’t fancy or expensive.
They’re the old tricks that have been passed around for years, shared between neighbors over fences and across garden rows.
And anything that lets us sit outside on an Oklahoma evening without being carried away by mosquitoes is worth sharing.
Stay dry, enjoy the green grass, and get ready for porch-sitting season.

Spring Reset at the Cottage

Every spring I get the urge to open the windows, wash everything that can fit in the washing machine, light a fresh candle, and reset the house after a long winter.

Spring at the Cottage means fresh laundry hanging in the air, new soap bars by the sink, clean sheets on the bed, and the windows open just enough to let the breeze in. The house always feels different after that first big spring clean — lighter, brighter, and somehow calmer.

We switch to fresh scents, scrub the winter away, and start again with a clean slate.

There is just something about a clean house in the spring that makes everything feel like a fresh start.
A fresh home, a fresh season, and a fresh start for the year ahead.

Breaking News from the Cottage…
After months of testing, customer surveys, and one very confused soap room, we are proud to announce our newest product:
Bacon Scented Laundry Soap
Because who doesn’t want their towels to smell like Saturday morning breakfast?
Imagine:
• Bacon-scented blankets
• Bacon-scented hoodies
• Bacon-scented pillowcases
• Dogs following you everywhere
• Your family suddenly doing more laundry
We’re calling the scent:
“Farmhouse Breakfast”
Notes include:
• Crispy bacon
• Maple syrup
• Cast iron skillet
• Regret
Available never.
Because this is clearly a terrible idea.
Happy April Fool’s Day from Cottage Goods! 😉
But we do make laundry soap that makes your clothes smell amazing… just not like bacon.

Sometimes I don’t think people realize what happens when they shop small.

When you buy from Cottage Goods, your order isn’t coming from a warehouse.
It’s coming from a workshop where candles are poured one at a time, soap is cut by hand, laundry soap is mixed in small batches, and labels are put on one jar at a time.

There is no big shipping department.
There’s just a table, some boxes, packing paper, and probably a dog supervising the entire operation.

Every purchase helps buy more wax, more oils, more soap molds, more jars, and keeps this little business going.

So if you have ever bought a bar of soap, a candle, laundry soap, lip balm, beard balm, or even just shared a post — thank you.

You are the reason Cottage Goods exists.
And I am very grateful for every single one of you.

What’s Cookin’ at the Cottage?
It’s Saturday morning and the cottage kitchen was busy again… but this time it wasn’t soap in the pot. It was a fresh batch of natural deodorant — and we’re introducing a brand new scent: Bow Ties & Bourbon

This one feels a little refined… a little rugged… and perfectly balanced.

It opens with bright lemon, cedarwood, and patchouli top notes, followed by soft middle notes of rose, violet, and jasmine. As the scent settles, warm base notes of velvet woods and rich musk come forward for a smooth, lasting finish.

Like all Cottage Goods deodorants, this batch is crafted with simple, skin-friendly ingredients designed to keep you fresh without harsh chemicals.

It’s a scent that feels right at home whether you're headed to work, the woods, or an evening out.

Sometimes the best things cooking at the cottage are the ones that help you feel your best all day long.

What’s Cookin’ at the Cottage?
Well… today it’s soap!
With spring comes sunshine, green growth… and unfortunately poison ivy popping up where we least expect it. Around here that means it’s time to make one of our seasonal favorites — Cottage Goods Jewelweed Soap.
Jewelweed has long been known in traditional herbal care as nature’s helper when skin encounters poison ivy. So, when the plants begin to grow, we start crafting small batches of this special bar.
Here’s what’s going into today’s batch:
• Our gentle organic coconut oil soap base
• Jewelweed-infused oil
• Carefully cooked in a traditional lye bath
• Finished with white camphor and eucalyptus essential oils
The result is a fresh, woodsy bar many people like to keep on hand for those moments when a walk in the yard, garden, or woods turns into an unexpected meeting with poison ivy.
Just one more example of how we try to keep simple, plant-inspired solutions around the cottage.
Because sometimes the best remedies really do come straight from nature.

Clean Home, Cleaner Ingredients
Rethinking spring cleaning products
Spring cleaning has a reputation for strong smells, harsh chemicals, and “power through it” products.
But fresh doesn’t have to mean chemical-heavy.
A truly clean home is one that feels good to live in—where the air is lighter, the linens are fresh, and the products you use every day aren’t working against your health or your space.
What “clean” really means in our home:
It means choosing ingredients you recognize.
It means fewer toxins lingering in fabrics and in the air.
It means understanding that the products you use most—laundry soap and linen spray—matter more than the once-a-year deep clean.
Everyday products matter most.
Your laundry touches your skin all day.
Your linens hold scent in your home.
When these basics are made with care, the entire home feels calmer, fresher, and more intentional.
This spring, we’re choosing a reset that’s gentle but effective—clean homes made with cleaner ingredients.
Spring Reset — Fresh Starts, Naturally
Because fresh should feel good, not overwhelming.

Re-branding

We’ve been known as Soy Candle Cottage since 2005 and we will keep the business name to honor our beginning! Since that time, we have added so many natural products, our name is not descriptive of all we have to offer. Our products are all hand made (by us) in small batches to ensure quality. Our website is now BotanicU.com (Botanic products, all for U)!

We’ve kept our first URL (soycandlecottage.com) for those of you who have been with us from the beginning. It will re-direct you to the BotanicU.com site. Our increasing list of natural products is available on this site. Of course, hand poured soy candles and melts in more than 100 scents (our beginning); soy lotions and creams made from plant-based ingredients (no alcohol, mineral oil or parabens; made to absorb and not leave you greasy); organic coconut oil soaps (moisturizing, rinses clean and great for even the most sensitive skin); beard balm (a soft solid product made from soy & coconut oils with a touch of lanolin; use as a leave-in conditioner to moisturize the facial hair and help style); we now have a beard wash (in the same scents to compliment the beard balms) after researching the damaging affects of shampoo on the facial hair; shaving soap for our customers who shave, made from soy, coconut & olive oils with lanolin, cooked in a lye bath to harden (this product can be purchased by itself, or with a stainless steel cup and badger hair brush), with hot water, this turns into a rich lather that moisturizes during shaving. (Ummm...some women have confessed to using it on their legs..works just as well) :-)

We make a linen spray (mostly in lavender, but we can make in other scents if you wish), a foaming hand soap with Lavender Essential oil, and a spray that we call “my p**p don’t stink”, similar to the product of another name that people are aware, using a mix of essential oils that result in this being a great addition to a guest bathroom.

This fall, we are offering lavender sprigs full of lavender buds, harvested from our plants. They add a freshness by mixing into a room’s decor or the buds can be removed and added to the organza bag provided for a sachet to add to a drawer, closet, or car.
