USS Midway CV 41.

The USS Midway (CV-41) is a legendary aircraft carrier with a remarkable service history. Commissioned just after World War II on September 10, 1945, she was the first U.S. carrier too large to pass through the Panama Canal and held the title of the world’s largest ship until 1955.

Named after the pivotal Battle of Midway, she served for 47 years, participating in major operations including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. After her decommissioning in 1992, she found a new life as a museum ship in San Diego, California, where she continues to educate and inspire visitors as the centerpiece of the USS Midway Museum.

She was a technological marvel of her time, featuring an armored flight deck, a crew of over 4,000, and the capacity to carry up to 137 aircraft in her early years. One of her most famous moments came in 1947, when she launched a captured German V-2 rocket from her deck—the first large rocket ever launched from a moving platform.

If you're ever in San Diego, walking her decks is like stepping into living history.
