A narcissist will go out of their way to win over strangers, but will flip around and treat the people they claim to love like trash.
They will smile for the world, be charming in public, and make everyone around them believe they are kind, generous, and impossible to dislike. To outsiders, they look like the perfect friend, partner, or family member.
But behind closed doors, the story is completely different.
The same person who bends over backwards to impress strangers will ignore, belittle, or disrespect the people who love them the most. They save their patience, kindness, and good behavior for people who barely know them, while the ones who are loyal to them get the worst version of who they are.
They will talk sweetly to others, but criticize you.
They will support strangers, but dismiss your feelings.
They will protect their reputation, but damage your peace.
And the hardest part is that when you try to explain what you’re experiencing, no one believes you. Because to the outside world, they appear so wonderful. People only see the mask they carefully created.
But the people closest to them know the truth.
A narcissist doesn’t treat strangers better by accident. They do it because strangers give them admiration, attention, and validation. The people who truly love them don’t serve that same purpose anymore, so they stop trying.
That’s why being loved by a narcissist often feels like being valued in public but discarded in private.
