(R)evolution in Currency - Object 18: 1793 | Chain Cent

Struck in early 1793, the Chain cent was America’s first large cent. It was also the first circulating coin produced exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint.

The obverse firmly established Liberty – in name and personification – as the central symbol of our nation’s new coinage, while the reverse of 15 interlocking links drew on earlier Revolutionary imagery of Continental currency and the Fugio cent.

However, the design proved controversial. Liberty, one newspaper argued, appeared to be “in a fright,” while the chains proved more symbolic of slavery than unity.

After roughly 36,000 cents were struck, production paused. The Mint was out of planchets and the symbolism wasn’t appreciated. During the interim, a new design – the wreath cent – was quickly prepared. The episode offered the fledgling Mint an early lesson in the power and complexity of national symbolism.

💬 The quick reaction of the Mint begs the question: how much should public response shape the symbols our nation puts on money?

Major Error on 2021-S Morgan Dollar
F. MICHAEL FAZZARI

On Nov. 11, 2021, Independent Coin Graders (ICG) of Tampa, Fla., certified its first major Mint Error example of the recently released 100th Anniversary 2021-S Morgan dollars.

It appears that a small blob of die grease with tiny silver particles trapped within got between the planchet and obverse die just prior to striking. This resulted in an indentation, nearly as large as the digit "zero" right behind Liberty's mouth.

"It's possible that there are more of these strike-through errors out there," said Randy Campbell, ICG senior numismatist.

He urged collectors to check their coins for any irregularities. For more information, contact Campbell at (877) 221-4424.
