My mother bought this at a flea market in Massachusetts when I was eight or nine years old. Her intention was to take it to a silversmith to have the monogram changed. Her name (until she divorced and remarried) was Charlotte Bennett Angus. The monogram here, cAa (the last name is the large letter in the center in a monogram) would have been changed to cAb. I’m not sure if she never got around to it or if her divorce and remarriage, with the new last name Friend, thwarted her. But here is a gorgeous sterling silver bowl for sale!

This weekend is the last weekend of the season. Come on over and check us out before we pack up for the winter!

These are some raku wall hangings I made. I try not to make my raku pieces look functional since they are not. Most glazed pottery heats up slowly in the kiln and then cools down slowly so the glaze vitrifies (turns to glass, making it food safe) and doesn’t crack. In the raku process the kiln is heated rapidly to 1830 degrees Fahrenheit and then the kiln is opened and potters in leather aprons and welding helmets and gloves remove the pieces with long tongs and throw them into trash cans full of combustibles (like newspaper or straw), and then cover them for about 15 minutes. The process is called “oxygen reduction”, and combined with the heavy metals in the glaze, produce spectacular results!

This is the last weekend of the season to check us out!

I took a class from a nationally known artist, Richard Roth, who lives in Winlock, Washington. One of his signature processes is called slip carving. Technically slip will not stick to leather hard clay, so other raw materials are added to make an engobe, and that chemical combination of “slip” will stay on the clay. Once it’s re-dried to the leather hard stage it can then be carved. My favorite motifs are irises, calla lilies and leafy vines. I tend to use cobalt (blue) engobes and copper (green) ones. These are all food safe, dishwasher safe and microwave safe ☺

I picked up this cute little piece to sell in the shop. It shows the date of River Road Essentials grand opening: July 31, 2021. This first season is a short one, but we are looking forward to many summers of fun. The business is open Memorial Day-Labor Day because I teach full time at Northport High School fall-spring.

Come visit us this last weekend we're open!

Bekah Angus and Janina Wills have teamed up to create winter Sip & Spin events that will be sure to spark or enhance your creative nature at River Road Essentials! Janina will treat us all with delicious food each month.

The recommended donation is $50 per person and includes two dates:
-the 1st date is to create something out of clay
-and the 2nd is to glaze your piece

The donation covers the food for the two dates, the clay and glaze materials. Please bring a bottle of wine, or your favorite libation, to share.

The end times are flexible because some projects will take longer than others. Space is limited so reserve your space soon!
