Intrigued by the buzz about the latest installment in Matt Dinniman's DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL series? For , a die-hard fan (David) and a total newb (Jerry) share their thoughts on the first and eighth books! The first book is now available in paperback, and the 8th tome was released on Tuesday.
"If you like D&D and video games, you'll love reading about Carl trying to save himself and Princess Donut (his ex-girlfriend's cat) while also trying to save the world." -- Jerry
"Fresh off of Faction Wars and the fallout from that, the surviving crawlers are back at it, despite the AI going insane, the gods gaining self-awareness AND access to the Plenty's interplanetary tunnel system, the Nothing being broken, and Scolopendra being all up in ALL the things. Their numbers are dwindling, and between people taking deals, getting killed left and right on the 10th floor, and whatever the heck is happening over in the Pineapple Cabaret, is ANYONE gonna be left standing with Carl and Donut as they try to make it to the Ascendancy Games?!? ... To those readers who may not yet be familiar with DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL -- yes, yes those are all real things. And the series' readers are THERE for them. This story has no business being as strange, funny, inventive, and heartwarming as it is (given that it involved the death of, ya know, billions to get where we're at). Yeah, it's not high art. And at the end of the day, it IS Lit RPG. And and we're currently up to book 8 and they keep gettin' thicker. But it is SO worth it. Really enjoying this series-- and those who start are usually back for some (or all) of the rest of the books within a couple days, week and a half tops. It's fun, addictive, and an incredible escape. Now if only the crawlers can escape..." -- David
