Pennsylvania Update: Lehigh River up in Lehighton.

Size 12 - 14 CDC mayfly emergers worked well for matching the Hendrickson's we saw coming off and later the spinners after 6pm.

Fattest Caddis was doing well before 4pm for the grannom caddis. Landed two browns around 2pm in the slack water along the edges.

Caught a 16" brown on a tan mop fly and had another hit on a caddis pupa trailing 20-inches behind the mop.

Some BWOs were on the surface later in the afternoon, but no action on that just yet. Hendrickson's were mating or spent, trout were just sipping those up.

Streamers are working great right now. We did great swinging 3-inch articulated streamers through deep pools along the banks. Flows might not return to normal until next week after all this upcoming rain.

Here's an in-depth how-to video with everything you need to know about European nymphing otherwise known as Euro nymphing in fly fishing! We're answering all your questions about this tight-line nymphing technique so you can catch trout year round. It’s one of the easiest ways to catch trout while fly fishing! Learn essential tips for euro nymphing including how to set up a euro nymphing rig, the best euro nymphing fly rods, why you should use a euro fly leader, the best European nymph flies, and much more.

Euro Fly Leaders: https://TheFlyCrate.com/product/euro-nymphing-leader/
Euro Nymphs: https://theflycrate.com/product-category/fly-fishing-flies/barbless-flies/

One thing we forgot to mention was how to add a dropper to your European nymphing rig. The strongest and easiest knot to use is the Orvis Tippet knot, which can be used to add a dropper tag into your fly leader or by adding a brand new section to the end.

What do you need to Euro nymph? I forgot to mention fly line, fly leader, and reel. Fly reels are just there to hold your fly line so you can use any reel of your choice. Just match the fly reel ‘weight’ to the ‘weight’ of the rod.

You can use your standard 9-foot tapered fly leader and attach some colored yarn or backing material several feet above your flies. This will act as a sliding hi-vis indicator as you tight-line nymph. In addition, your fly line will rarely be used so you can use whatever ‘nymphing’ made fly line just in case you want to go from euro nymphing and switch to fishing a strike indicator at a distance.

What flies do you actually need? In all honesty, you can use ANY nymph you want with a tight-line and European nymphing technique. It doesn’t matter what you fish, but your goal should be to keep your rod high and in constant ‘contact’ with the flies below. Constant contact using a straight, nearly taut line to your flies allows you to feel even the most subtle take.

Some of our favorite winter trout flies include Zebra Midges, Hare’s Ear Nymphs, Jig Squirmy Wormies, Candy Eggs, Perdigons, Griffith’s Gnats, Crystal Jig Bu**ers, and Walt’s Worms. Here’s why.

Fly selection will be even more important at this time of the year, as the trout will be feeding less aggressively. Now, you’re not going to rely on dry fly fishing throughout the winter – in fact, it’s rare that you’ll encounter trout rising frequent enough to tie a dry fly on.

Trout will feed on nymphs, such as caddis larvae, mayfly nymphs, midges, scuds or sowbugs, and stonefly nymphs. Midges continue to breed in large swarms throughout the fall and winter months. That’s why midges will be the main source of food for trout.

You can also do well on attractor flies like worms, eggs, and mop flies. On occasion, trout will also gobble up a crayfish or a minnow that wanders close to them.

Can you fly fish in the winter for trout? Yes, absolutely. Many people do every day despite the cold weather. Just depends on your local streams and weather. Nymphing and stripping streamer flies low and slow are going to be the best methods. Plus, actually go fly fish where there are trout. Tailwaters and spring-fed rivers are going to be best places to travel to. These have warmer water temperatures than most other rivers year-round. More tips coming over the next few days.

A mend is when you lift the rod tip and consequently, the fly line off the water to create an an arc of slack in a specific direction. This helps prevent your dry fly or nymphing rig from dragging through the water unnaturally. Choosing the right flies is only half the battle. Knowing how to present them well is really what makes all the difference. You could have the right flies, but if you're presentation stinks you won't catch a thing. That's why learning how to mend your fly line upstream or downstream is super important in fly fishing. https://theflycrate.com/how-to-mend-your-fly-line-when-fly-fishing/

Anyone in Utah still getting after it?? Our flies are now tested and proven in Utah and surrounding areas! Can’t get enough of these fall day. The Utah scenery doesn’t get much better.

Typically we are catching fish with nymphs this time of year as the weather is getting colder.

This go around surprised us as we a few strikes on the beetle pattern that we were using as the indicator.

Fish still have their eyes on the surface!

Good luck!
