Island Craft Shop

Island Craft Shop Artisan Cooperative The Island Craft Shop is the oldest artisan cooperative in Grand Isle County, Vermont. This is a member-owned and operated business.
(1)

It was founded in 1991 by a group of talented Champlain Island crafters including Sue Alenick, Mary Jane Healy, June Lynch and Ethel Schue. Over the years there have been many changes: the shop has moved several times and members have come and gone, but the Island Craft Shop continues to offer some of the best and most innovative Vermont products. From modest beginnings, the shop has grown into a

must-see destination for Islanders and visitors alike. Twenty-one members now exhibit a wide ranging array of unique crafts, from locally sourced preserves to fiber goods, fused and stained glass art, jewelry in a variety of styles, turned wooden household items, watercolor and acrylic paintings, candles, garden ornaments and many other made-in-Vermont items. There is always an artisan member in the shop to welcome you and to answer any questions about the crafts on display

Our new location is 329 US Route 2, South Hero, Vermont.

So let's talk maple syrup that we carry at our shop. We have a local artist that strives to bring quality fire boiled syrup with some of the lowest prices around. Here is information on the two grades that we carry and why they happen. We also will be carrying maple sugar shortly as well. So come stock up with us when you stop by. Open daily 10a-4p

Curious about the difference between amber-rich and dark-robust syrup? Many people think darker maple syrup is "stronger" or lower quality—but that's not the case! Both Amber-Rich and Dark-Robust syrups are pure maple syrup, just with different flavor profiles. Amber-rich (formerly Grade A Medium) is the universal syrup, perfect for pancakes, waffles, yogurt, and general sweetening. It's lighter in color and has that classic smooth maple flavor. Dark-robust (formerly Grade A Dark) has a much deeper and richer maple flavor. It's excellent for coffee, marinades, dressings, and baked goods, or for anyone who truly loves that bold maple taste. They both have the same sugar content; the darker color generally comes later in the sugaring season when there is more bacteria and yeast due to warmer temperatures. These organisms break down the glucose into simpler sugars, which caramelize more when heated, resulting in a darker color and bolder flavor.

Here are the dates and locations of where the shop has been throughout the years that we have records for or Sue Alenick one of the original members can recollect.

1992 – Chamber of Commerce building (before it was the Chamber) – two rooms, ? year(s)

???? – Small building behind Chamber of Commerce, ? year(s)

2007 – Shared space with Rene Valley’s Antique Barn in Grand Isle, 1 year

2008 – 2009 Garage behind Hero’s Welcome, 2 years
