The SpeakerCraft MZC-66 and MZC-88 are still some of the most innovative and unique multizone audio controllers in existence. Unfortunately, the manufacturer is no longer offering repair services for these units. This is unfortunate, because it leaves the customer weighing the options if/when their unit fails.
1 - Buy an unproven, unwarranted used unit. This could backfire, as they could end up
with yet another failed or failing unit.
2 - Replace the entire system with a different brand. This is costly, and probably more costly than the original installation. Good option for some, but some folks look for another option.
3 - Resurrect/refurbish your old unit, or trade it in on one that has been meticulously refreshed of all typical failure components. This is what Tangletree MZC Resurrection does. I can refurbish your unit, or take it on trade for units that have been repaired to working specifications. Failed components are replaced. Also, components that are known to typically fail are replaced (even if they have not failed yet). All electrolytic capacitors replaced in amplifier stages. as well as number of key preventative measures to further extend the life. I expect that these modifications and repairs will add years of life to the MZC investment. This is what I do:
Power supply - replace key capacitors and voltage regulators that fall out of tolerance + relocate and upsize a heat generating component that causes premature failure of the MZC's. Critical... I added a case cooling fan for amplifier cooling (life expectancy on the fan = >6 yrs)
Electrolytic capacitors age faster in a hot environment. In the amplifier cards - I replace all electrolytics - 64 in the MZC-88 and 30+ in the MZC-66. I flash bios to the latest available (2.2.8)
If you don't have an installer, I can create a basic program for audio routing to the specifics of your home installation. I have experience repairing electronics dating back 20 years plus, have my Extra ham ticket, and have a passion for resurrecting the MZC's! I have repaired a number of these with good success. My motto...no MZC should be allowed to die without a chance to fully serve. I offer 14 day return on the systems I sell, but I offer 90 day warranty on component failure (Exceptions are negligent action by others, or failure modes caused by natural disaster (water, wind, power surge, lightning, fire, etc.).
