FIVE DAYS REMAIN TO APPLY: The Art Life Workshop with Curran Hatleberg and Sasha Wolf

Two spots left

We chose TOURISTS in North Adams, Massachusetts to host our fall retreat because it has been long been one of Charcoal Book Club’s secret work hideaways for many years. The intimacy, beauty and attention to detail of this premium hotel Tucked away in the heart of the Berkshires, is unparalleled. North Adams is also home to MASS MoCA, the largest contemporary art museum in the United States.

We’ve rented both side-by-side homes where we will gather together, cook meals, take in the mountains, gaze at the fire, and obsess over photography. Spending time together to deepen, expand, and enrich our artistic practice. Together attendees will not only examine work, but also the concerns, obstacles, and bottlenecks of the art life from the perspectives  of an artist, a curator/gallerist, and a publisher.

What to expect:
- Intimate discussions
- Individual portfolio reviews
- Group critiques
- Family style dinner
- Walks along the river
- Cocktails by the fire
- Long-lasting community

This retreat is limited to 11 participants. Find more details and apply at charcoalworkshops.com.

We can’t wait to see you in October!

WORKSHOP: The Limits of the Photographic Act with Antoine d’Agata - Applications due August 17

Join Magnum photographer Antoine d’Agata, for a five-day workshop focused on photographing intensively this September in Portland, Maine.

Participants will push the boundaries of their creative process while exploring their obsessions and contradictions. This workshop revolves around photography as a means of asserting a personal perception of the world. Looking beyond the purely documentary, these images make up a diary that allow this inventory of images to cut free from the constraints underlying the transcription of objective reality.

Each participant will be asked to examine the ultimate goal of their approach. Since images, like words, only take on meaning when brought together, the workshop will focus on finding the most relevant form for each individual stance. This workshop provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in a committed and challenging photographic practice, allowing each participant to redefine their relationship with the image and their ability to narrate the world from an authentic and personal perspective.

For the past 30 years, Antoine d’Agata has lived and photographed all over the world and has published some 50 works. He has been a full member of the Magnum Photos agency since 2008. Internationally renowned, his work has been featured as the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, shown in various museums, and included in public and private collections throughout the world.

We can’t wait to see you in Maine! Applications available at charcoalworkshops.com

After much deliberation we are happy to announce that we have awarded Dom Marker the Charcoal Publishing Prize from the 2024 Chico Review. We are very excited to work with Dom, and look forward to developing and publishing his first monograph.

Dom Marker (b. Kharkiv, 1990) is a self-taught Ukrainian-American artist. Born during the collapse of the USSR, Marker emigrated to New York City with his parents when he was three years old. He returned to Ukraine for the first time shortly after the full-scale invasion in 2022, volunteering on humanitarian missions in frontline regions. His emergent artistic practice is embedded in community activism, analog processes, and archival material, focused on themes of belonging, transience, and the hauntological nature of images as document. Marker’s move back to his birthplace in the midst of war, and subsequent reconciliation with Ukrainian heritage, is the core of his ongoing, long-term work.

New in the shop: (I) Remember Europe by Patricia Morosan

The centre as an existential quest and as a political metaphor - an emotional location in the coordinates that define themselves as the geographical centre of Europe. Several places in seven countries claim to be in the centre of Europe - and each of them points to it with its own monument. The midpoints are located in Germany, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and Slovakia. Since there are different methods for calculating the centre point, several places claim the title. Its shifts are not only the result of "big" history, but also of the movements and adjustments experienced daily by everyone who roams these countries. The project is less an attempt to grasp the essence of a supposed European identity than a willingness to let go of such an idea in order to discover, with each encounter, new centres that in turn designate new "edges of the world", new spaces in between. At every moment of Patricia Morosan's journey, Europe seems to tilt in the process, to find a new equilibrium a little further on.

Back in Stock: The Pillar by Stephen Gill

The landscape that surrounds my home in Sweden can be misleading. The bird activity it holds is diluted and disguised by the vast flat open land and sky that offers an impression of little going on.

In January 2015, with an inkling of bird activity being more prominent than at first met my eyes, I decided to try to pull them out of the sky. I set up an 8cm diameter stage in the form of a wooden pillar that was around one and half meters in height, and opposite it another the same on which I mounted a camera that was triggered by motion.

I visited the camera a few days later and, to my surprise, it had worked. The pillar somehow managed to funnel the birds from the sky by offering them a place to rest, feed, nurse their young, and observe. I was captivated immediately. The images were often unsettled, the birds awkward like contortionists, completely off-beat and the shapes and soft lines created were so arresting.

From my kitchen window the pillar could be seen in the distance like a matchstick in the flat distance. My absence in turn somehow allowed a greater mental presence during the making of the work. I was frequently there though only in my mind, wondering what was happening at that very moment as I sat on a local train, or went about my daily routine. Even when I was out of the country I would be imagining the activity on the stage.
