Every time we grow beefsteak tomatoes, we wonder "how much bigger can they grow"?!? This one plant has SIX huge tomatoes on it (the ripest is peeking out on the bottom). They are so huge, they can barely fit inside the stems. And for those wondering the secret:

Peppers are starting to ripen (despite the nightly deer nibbles!). The longer they stay on the vine, the sweeter (or hotter) they'll get. It's tempting to pick them when they're green but be patient! In just another week or so, they'll be at peak ripeness.

We wish you could smell this Lemon Verbena! Just heavenly with lemon and vanilla tones and big beautiful stems. We picked a bunch and turned it into lemon simple syrup for cocktails. This freezes well! This delicious herb is also good with fish and poultry or made into a lemony pesto. And the more you trim it, the more it grows!
Peppers are starting to turn red -- the longer they stay on the vine, the sweeter (or hotter) they'll get. This variety (C***o Di Toro) goes from green to orange to red.
Mystery squash update: we have another one! I'm thinking this is maybe a white pumpkin? The littles in our family are enjoying watching this grow!

August is the perfect time to plant veggies for a fall harvest. With nearly three months left of garden season, even crops like tomatoes can be planted right now. Spring is in full bloom and we're all anxious to get out there and dig! So letβs start with what not to do! As much as you want to, avoid the urge to clean everything up. Right now so many beneficial insects and bug predators (like frogs) are tucked away in the leaf litter, hollow plant stems, and even cocooned up and disguised as dried out leaves. They need that debris as cover to stay warm and raise their babies. Wait until the weather is above 50Β°F for seven days in a row (at night too!) before disturbing garden debris. Also avoid the urge to put down mulch β many critters overwinter in the soil and they will struggle to emerge through a layer of new mulch. If you just canβt bear looking at dried out plants, be intentional in how you clean up. When you trim, leave about 8β of stalk behind and whatever you take out, handle gently, donβt crush, and lay aside for a couple more weeks before burning or taking to the landfill. Just make sure youβre not leaving them in an area that will get overly wet with spring rain.
