Congratulations to Truly Matthews on being honored with Top 40 Under 40!

We’re proud to share the big news that Truly Matthews, Virginia MOCA Deputy Director, Director of Education & Engagement, has been named to the The Virginian-Pilot’s Inside Business 2026 Top 40 Under 40 list!

This annual recognition celebrates young professionals who are making an impact in both their careers and their communities.

At Virginia MOCA, Truly helps lead strategy, organizational management, education and community engagement. “A lot of my work is taking big ideas and figuring out how to make them thoughtful, useful and actually happen, including developing and implementing programs and projects that create opportunities for people to connect with contemporary art, artists and one another.”

Matthews’s motivating factor is growth and possibility. “I didn’t grow up knowing museum work was a career option beyond the traditional curator role, and leadership wasn’t something I initially saw for myself. This field has helped me discover strengths and opportunities I didn’t know were there, and that keeps me motivated to keep growing and to help create those same kinds of possibilities for others.”

Beyond Virginia MOCA, Matthews serves on the board of 757 Creative ReUse Center and Tidewater Community College’s graphic design advisory board and volunteers with WHRO Public Media pledge drives. She has also served on the Virginia Art Education Association Executive Board, WHRO’s Emerging Leaders Board, as a mentor at Seatack Elementary School, and as a juror for the Southeastern Museums Conference Technology Competition.

Please join us in congratulating Truly on this well-deserved recognition! Her leadership has shaped so much of what makes Virginia MOCA special and we are proud of everything she brings to this institution and this community.

Thanks to you all, we have diverted 7,380 pounds of usable materials from the landfill since reopening at our new location. We’re currently accepting limited donations appointments as we continue to get settled and find our workflows. Appointments can be made on our website, at this time we cannot accept more than 6 bags or boxes per donation appointment. If you would like to drop off, but don’t see a good time available, please call us at 757-937-3821, during normal business hours, and we’ll try to find a time that works for you. We never want to turn away donations, but if you arrive without an appointment and the donation sorting area is full, you will be turned away. Link for appointments in comments.

Saturday, October 17th, please join us from 9am - noon to plant some fruit trees! We’ve partnered with our friends at Community Farmers and the Elizabeth River Projects to expand our edible and native plant garden. We’ll be planting apples, peaches, blueberries, serviceberries, and paw-paw trees. Bring some gloves and a shovel and lay the groundwork to help us feed our community. Next Saturday, October 24, is the Highland Park Halloween Party. Many of the businesses on Colley Ave will have candy for the kiddos. Get a stamp on your map at each location to be entered to will raffle prizes, including a gift card to the 757 Creative ReUse Center....

Thank you all so much for showing up for our Grand ReOpening this past Sunday. We knew to expect a crowd, but we were just shocked by how many people came to shop! We had well over three hundred customers making it our busiest shopping day ever. We were particularly pleased by the diversity of the crowd. Literally every single kind of person was represented. I think we’re still recovering from the intensity of it all. It was raining, the parking lot was full, the streets were flooded, then the power faltered, and around 3pm it went out completely for over an hour, but y’all just kept shopping with flashlights. And you waited, very patiently, for me to check you out on my phone. Thank you so much for bearing with us through all the excitement.
We also want to extend a huge thank you to all of our partners who came out to help us celebrate. The Weavers Guild of Tidewater did hands-on weaving demonstrations throughout the day, the Chrysler Museum & Glass Studio and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art did crafts with the crowd, Hampton Roads Chapter - Punk Rock Saves Lives swabbed folks for a bone marrow registry and handed out harm reduction supplies, HR Repro Justice League tabled and gave away supplies, Keep Norfolk Beautiful donated a trash can which was painted by Heidi Joy of Industry of Human Connection🦋 and all of you all helped, and More Amor Bakery 💕, BPSB 🍪The Plant-Based Brothers and Paris Williams provided us with snacks and drinks all day! I hope I remembered everyone!

Wow! Thank you guys for showing up for us! We knew it was going to be busy, but we're seriously blown away by the size of this crowd today. So glad to be back and see so many of our favorite people coming through the doors. We're here until 6 today....
