this month for our radical studies book club, we're getting into In Pursuit of Revolutionary Love: Precarity, Power, Communities by Joy James

"Violence is arrayed against me because I'm Black, or female, or q***r, or undocumented. There is no rescue team coming for us. With that knowledge, we need a different operational base to recreate the world. It is not going to be a celebrity savior. Never was, never will be. If you're in a religious tradition that is millennia-old, consider how the last savior went out. It was always going to be bloody. It was always going to be traumatic. But there's a beauty to facing the reality of our lives. Not our lives as they're broken apart, written about and then sold back to us in academic or celebrity discourse. But our lives as we understand them. The most important thing is showing up. Showing up and learning how to live by and with others, learning how to reinvent ourselves in this increasing wasteland. That's the good life."

come through and chat about exactly what showing up means & how we can do it wholly and honestly when everything in the world feels overwhelming.

It is anything love. It is love without recknoning. It is love that dares all things, beyond which others may find the spirit-force to survive; to live to fight another day. such love is also figthing instelf, for the sake of ensuring that others may live - Mumia Abu-Jamal]

a pride month note that's been ringing in our brains from the introduction to Homosexual Intifada: A Q***r Palestinian Anthology by Hannah Moushabeck & George Abraham -

"what, then, to say of the body at the end of empire?...the ruling class is more than willing to dispose of our bodies on a mass scale for their continued profit. it is a lesson our q***r and trans kin have been embodying for generations, fighting against colonial mediated bio-disposability in the AIDS pandemic...

Palestinian and q***r struggles, non-metaphorically, are interconnected at an intimate, embodied level. we are the bodies that the bio-political paves over in its living; the permissible slaughter, however fast or slow our deaths are...what are all of our bodies if not the exact targets the ruling class need to dispose of, by any means necessary, to keep the rotted heart of this current world order beating?

we hope these works, which treat q***r Palestinian life on our own terms, give you clarity and precision of language that feels dangerous to the imperial English of our daily lives. "

this anthology brings together the voices of q***r Palestinian writers from both the diaspora & homeland through essays, short stories, poetry, comics, photo essays, and memoir.

y'all ever notice the little flame logo that speckles our shelves? it represents on of our favorite indie publishers -

was founded in 1970 by Florence Howe & focused on providing essential texts for the emerging field of women’s studies. they reprinted classics by writers such as Zora Neale Hurston and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and recovered “lost” women’s writing from around the world.

they aim to dismantle barriers to access in publishing & provide opportunities to historically marginalized writers through initiatives such as our Emerging Feminist Writers Program and Our Amethyst Editions imprint. they also offer a paid apprenticeship program to provide mentorship to the future feminists in publishing.

Feminist Press publishes twelve to fifteen books a year and specializes in an array of genres including literary fiction, activist nonfiction, literature in translation, hybrid memoirs, and more.

pro-tip - look to them for pieces that are lyrically gorgeous and bring forward unheard stories. if you don't where to start, one of our favorite books from them is Blood Feast by Malika Moustadraf📚

If now isn't a good time for the truth I don't see when we'll get to it.
-Nikki Giovanni

recently, i listened to Against Breaking by Ada Limón and it was such a lovely welcoming back to an art form that encourages dreaming & connection through the ability of words to create and inspire. lyrically gorgeous, this slim read speaks to sharing the truth and the strength in tenderness. if you're looking for a read that will hold & guide, this is it.
