The Alpha and the Omega. This shot knocked me back a few feet. Let me explain…
In the foreground we have Wentzle Ruml IV standing taking pictures as he looks on as my son, Tommy puts a backside Ollie over the hip. For y’all that don’t know your skate history Wentzle is one of the pioneers of modern transition skateboarding. And my son was one of the youngest skaters on-site for The City of the Presidents Skate Jam. The Alpha being the beginning (Wentzle) and the Omega, being Tommy. 50 years apart enjoying skateboarding at its very core.
And now for the second part of this amazing photo. Up there on top of the corner is a gentleman named Larkin Tanner. He’s the son of Matt Tanner. About 15 years ago me and Matt were talking at a skate jam very much like this one, and we were discussing how rad it was that he was actually skating with his son being able to share the same ramp feeling the same stoke. On this particular day Matt and I had a conversation where he had remembered that very discussion. And to see his son in the background playing in a skate rock band and skating with us on this very day is very meaningful to me. It’s absolutely the essence of Skateboarding. Fathers and their sons… forefathers and the young. There is nothing like skateboarding. If you don’t partake, then you just don’t know. But if you happen to share four wheels and a sheet of plywood, or a slab of concrete with one of your family or one of your friends than you know exactly what I’m talking about. This photo is amazing by Kaleb Whelan. Thank you for producing this image. It shook me to my core. This is why we skate. The is the very essence of CCSB.
