🪴 Why Do Container Plants Need Water So Much More Often?

If you've ever wondered why your hanging baskets need water almost every day while your garden beds seem perfectly happy, there's a simple explanation!

Container plants have a much smaller supply of soil than plants growing in the ground. That means they dry out much more quickly—especially during warm, sunny, or windy weather.

Here's why:

☀ The sun heats the pot. Containers warm up much faster than the ground, causing moisture to evaporate more quickly.

💨 Wind dries them out. Air circulates around all sides of a pot, speeding up moisture loss.

🌱 More roots, less soil. As plants grow, their roots fill the container, leaving less soil available to hold water.

🌸 Hanging baskets dry out fastest. Because air circulates underneath them as well, they lose moisture even more quickly than pots sitting on the ground.

Watering Tips for Containers

💧 Check your pots every day during hot weather.
💧 Water until you see water draining from the bottom of the container.
💧 Water early in the morning whenever possible.
💧 Large containers generally stay moist longer than small ones.
💧 Adding mulch to larger containers can help slow evaporation.

Remember, not every container needs water every day. Instead of watering on a schedule, check the soil first. If the top inch feels dry, it's usually time to water.

Healthy roots start with consistent moisture—and healthy roots mean beautiful blooms all summer long!

Meet Your Garden's Best Helpers: Beneficial Insects

Not every bug in your garden is a pest! In fact, some insects are working hard to protect your plants naturally by feeding on harmful pests.

Here's a look at some of Maine's garden superheroes:

🐞 Lady Beetles (Ladybugs)
Both adults and larvae feast on aphids, mites, and scale insects. One lady beetle can eat dozens of aphids in a single day!

🪰 Hoverflies
Their adults resemble small bees and are excellent pollinators. Their larvae are voracious predators that feed on aphids and other soft-bodied insects.

🕸️ Green Lacewings
Known as "aphid lions," lacewing larvae eat aphids, mealybugs, thrips, whiteflies, and small caterpillars.

🪲 Praying Mantises
These patient hunters catch a variety of insects, including flies, beetles, moths, and even some garden pests. While they're generalists and don't distinguish between "good" and "bad" bugs, they're fascinating predators to have around.

🪺 Parasitic Wasps
These tiny, non-aggressive wasps lay their eggs inside garden pests like tomato hornworms, cabbage worms, and aphids. They're one of nature's best forms of biological pest control.

🌼 How can you attract beneficial insects?
• Plant a variety of flowering plants.
• Grow herbs like dill, fennel, cilantro, and thyme.
• Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides whenever possible.
• Leave a few natural areas for insects to shelter.

A healthy garden isn't one without insects—it's one with the right balance of insects.

Which beneficial bug have you spotted in your garden this summer?

Healthy Soil = Better Fall Gardens 🌱

Before planting your fall crops, give your soil a little love.

Adding fresh compost helps:
• Improve drainage
• Feed beneficial microbes
• Hold moisture during hot August days
• Support healthier root growth

Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful garden.
