This may look like a healthy and sustainable ecosystem, but really it’s just an oasis of bio-diversity in a desert of monoculture. The small patch on the hill is what’s left of the once healthy native rainforest, home to hundreds of tree, plant, animal, insect, and bird species. It is surrounded by fields of oil palm where all those species have been stripped away and herbicides are used to keep the land mostly barren except for the palm oil trees.

Palm oil isn’t exactly the healthiest oil, but if stores that we expect to have high standards of sustainability like Trader Joe’s are going to put it in most of their yummy snacks (not to mention all the top food companies: Kellogg’s, Kraft, PepsiCo, etc), then we should demand that they buy it from sustainable sources.
