Newburgh ArtSupply turns 9!
July 26, 2008, Michael Gabor and Gerardo Castro embarked on a journey that to many seemed crazy - opening an art supply store when the economy had tanked but we had a clear vision: build an arts community in Newburgh as well as changing the negative perceptions people had of our city, we wanted visitors to see what a magnificent place this is. Looking back on these nine years we are filled with immense pride for what we have achieved and even greater gratitude for the incredible support which has helped us get here. Our successes, rooted in our continuous commitment to community and friendships are in no small way a direct result of the overwhelming support we have received from our community, customers, and partners. We have and continue to collaborate and partner with many local businesses, colleges, institutions and individuals to create events, gallery exhibitions and countless activities that foster change and transform our everyday experience with the arts. The Lightbulb Project, Art About Water, The Palatine Shop and the highly anticipated Newburgh Open Studios celebrating 7 years in September have become a staple, of the Arts, in Newburgh. We THANK YOU and remember to do something today that your future self will thank you for!

Looking for a giving tree and conversation piece for this Holiday Season? Arbor Libertatis: Latin which plainly translates to LIBERTY TREE. During the Revolutionary War, rebels, known as Sons of Liberty, used certain trees as meeting venues or to signal other patriots about activities against the British. The British knew how important these trees were to the colonists and destroyed many of them. On November 14th 2008 the New York Liberty Tree, a Tulip Poplar, was planted at Washington’s Headquarters. It is the only location in New York where a liberty tree has been planted. This can be found on each side of the Victory Town on our Limited Edition Silver Medallion and can only be found The Palatine Shop and Newburgh Art Supply. $74.99

TODAY IN NEWBURGH HISTORY!
December 17, 1941, Newburgh NY. a newly married couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, premiered at the Ritz Theater, Newburgh. They did a piece of comedy, a little singing, a little dancing. The audience loved it. The beginnings of the I LOVE LUCY SHOW!

December 17 is also important to the practices of Afro-Cuban religion Santeria. What’s the connection between Desi Arnaz, “Ricky Ricardo”, December 17th, and his signature song Babalu?

In Ricky;s signature song "Babalu", he was singing to Babalu Aye, one of the deities, or “orishas”, of the Afro-Cuban religion, Santeria. In the syncretic practices of Santeria, in which African orsihas are associated with catholic saints, the representative of Babalu Aye is Saint Lazarus, whose feast day is December 17th.

Babalu Aye controls small pox and other virulent diseases, such as leprosy, and other such conditions which make their presence seen on the person’s skin as rashes, pustules, and other forms of degeneration or decay of tissue. Babalu comes out at night and during the day hides among the ivy, and the coralillo trees and (cundeamor) bitter melon for sun protection because of his decaying skin. I, Gerardo Castro personally love how that slipped by ALL of America…singing to the African Santeria god of diseases and plagues - I LOVE IT!
