Newark Bike Project

Newark Bike Project Non-profit used bike donations, sales, repairs & education

NOW OPEN Special programs enable kids and lower income members of the community to own a bicycle.

The Newark Bike Project offers "learn to do-it-yourself" repair facilities, bicycle recycling, and educational programs for the Newark, Delaware, community. History
Inspired by the wonderful Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, some Newark-area UBP volunteers wished to spread the benefits of a UBP-style shop to Newark. In November 2011, a small group of bicycle enthusiasts started to formalize this i

nterest by gathering various Newark biking advocates to brainstorm ideas for a community-led bike organization. People
The Newark Bike Project is organized and run by volunteers among the residential and University of Delaware communities in Newark. Anyone who is passionate about biking, helping others, learning, and improving their community through the advancement of biking is encouraged to join us! How it works
A bike project centers around a community repair shop with shared professional tools and knowledgeable teaching-oriented volunteer mechanics. Funding comes from donations, grants, parts sales, and the refurbishing and sale of donated bicycles that would otherwise have been discarded.

Here's a really fun one, a late 80s/early 90s Schwinn Frontier and an early stab at bringing back the 650B tire size. Many people know that rim and tire size as 27.5 these days.

An awesome commuter and light trail bike for the rider in the 5'0"-5'4" range, 44cm frame.

650B/27.5 tires are plentiful now, buy without fear of tire supply.

Take it back to 2004 and the birth of the most recent wave of the fixed gear craze with this chrome Bianchi Pista.

The off the shelf gem of the mid 2000s bike forums (I guess I could explain those as being like Discord but I don't want to age myself that much this morning) is available now. 53cm, flip flop rear wheel single speed (you can coast) fixed gear (no coasting)

A little bit of surface rust/pitting near the bottom bracket (see 2nd picture) which is not unheard of on these old chromed frames. Currently $450, come in and check it or any of our other bikes out, also viewable on our online catalog!

Larry Kwart was an early volunteer with NBP and all around helpful and great guy. In recent years he wasn't found in the shop as much but he was always eager to go out to events with us in the community, often a mainstay at the safety checkpoint on the Green events we would have with and . We'll put a link to the full obituary in our bio, thanks for the years of service to local cycling, family and friends Larry πŸ–€

Our team had a great time at the Downes (John R.) Elementary School Healthy Families Night yesterday! Our young visitors had a blast practicing inflating a tire--an irresistible opportunity for a kid to try out a new activity--while planting a seed in their mind that they can maintain a bike.
