Early Fetch but not that early: at one point he had his left hand on the fish’s back behind him and his right hand holding on in front, but at some point I moved him into what I was thinking of as the “awww hell!” position and this became the basis of the logo.

Keep seeing posts about sailing dying. It isn’t.

Yes, Catalina is gone. That stings. But let’s be honest about what that is — a company that got acquired badly and collapsed fast. It’s not a eulogy for the sport.

4.1 million Americans sailed in 2023. Up 13% from the year before. The highest number in nearly a decade. Sailing isn’t dying. It’s changing: fewer people want to own a boat outright, more people want to get on the water. Those are solvable problems.

The boats are already here. Thousands of fiberglass classics sitting in boatyards right now, solid and affordable, waiting for someone (or a few someones) who actually wants to sail them. The 43-year-old Pearson in the slip next to yours isn’t a problem. It’s the point.

The clubs that are growing have figured this out. They stopped requiring boat ownership to join. They dropped the bar tab minimums. They made room for people who just want to be on the water.

If you’re worried, here’s what you can do. Bring someone new on as crew. Find a club that accepts non-boat owners and point people toward it — or join one yourself. Don’t make the terminology a barrier. They’ll learn it underway.

The wind hasn’t changed. The water’s still there. We just have to keep passing it on.
