Happy 1 Year Anniversary to Prose & Roast!

Over the past year, we’ve been proud to collaborate with local cafes and community spaces to bring books into more everyday environments and create new opportunities for people to discover stories, authors, and conversations.

Independent bookstores remain essential cultural and community spaces, and we’re grateful to exist alongside them as another way to help connect readers with books. Whether through our shelves inside partner spaces or through our off-site author events, our goal has always been simple: to help create more moments where books and people can meet.

This year, we’ve especially loved building programming that allows authors to connect with readers in welcoming spaces outside of traditional venues. Seeing those conversations happen in intimate, community-driven settings has been incredibly meaningful and has reinforced our belief that books belong everywhere people gather.

Thank you to our cafe partners, authors, readers, and everyone who has supported us during our first year. We’re excited to continue celebrating books, supporting literary community, and creating spaces for discovery together.

Celebrating Legacy! A two-day Birthday Celebration: Malcolm X at 101 Annual Tribute—featuring the official Book Launch of Malcolm in the Desert: Wisdom from the Spiritual Transformation of Malcolm X and a powerful “Community Celebration!”

Join The Shabazz Center for a two-day celebration and fundraiser honoring the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Malcolm X with powerful speakers, performers, and electrifying ambiance in the very place where he was martyred and took his last breath, in front of those he loved and a community he served. Visit historical and sacred grounds where his beloved wife, Dr. Betty Shabazz, turned tragedy into triumph at The Shabazz Center – for this generation to have a place of their own to convene. The Celebration will begin with Day 1 the official Book Launch of Malcolm in the Desert: Wisdom from the Spiritual Transformation of Malcolm X by Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz and will continue to Day 2 culminating into a powerful community celebration of his enduring global impact.

Malcolm X at 101 Annual Tribute brings together reflection, culture, and community to honor a legacy in Love, Unity, & Strength – one that continues to shape our world.

We had such a special evening at the annual member dinner 🐦🌿

Prose & Roast was honored to be part of a night dedicated to celebrating the organization’s ongoing work and the community that supports it. We loved hearing from guest speaker Ryan Goldberg, author of Bird City, who shared insights into the fascinating bird life moving through New York City, from migration patterns to the often-overlooked wildlife all around us.

We were especially glad to support the evening by providing book sales for Ryan and Bird City, connecting readers directly with his work.

Thank you to for the opportunity, and to everyone who made the night so thoughtful and inspiring.

Event description courtesy of PEN America:
In this talk rooted in the Latinx and Caribbean joy that exploded from Bad Bunny’s 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, writers from across the Caribbean join us to discuss the ways they are constructing identity within and without the diaspora and maintaining their roots through the publication of their creative work. Moderated by Executive Director of the Bronx Book Festival Saraciea Fennell this discussion features PEN America Board member and author Esmeralda Santiago (Las Madres), award-winning novelist Angie Cruz (How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water), and debut author Justin Haynes (Ibis).

The second one will be The Ordinary and The Atrocious: Na**sm in the Imagination of the Contemporary Playwright
4/30/26 @ 6:30 PM at The Center 208 W 13th St NY NY 10011

Event description courtesy of PEN America:
summer camp for German-American children to be indoctrinated into N**i ideology. A young Jewish boy coming of age in the Philippines after escaping N**i Germany. A photo album of Auschwitz staff relaxing. The subject matter varies widely, but eighty years on, the Holocaust and its stories continue to haunt contemporary playwrights.

Bess Wohl (Camp Siegfried), Boni B. Alvarez (Mix-Mix: The Filipino Adventures of a German Jewish Boy), Amanda Gronich (Here There Are Blueberries), and Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk come together with S. Dylan Zwickel (The Moss Maidens) to discuss their use of theatre, with its unique immediacy, to grapple with a past that feels ever more present.

We’re so excited to be part of these events and hope to see you there!
