Memorial Day, and the weather for once feels fitting to the occasion. Emerging from a long hibernation, we are of course remembering all we are grateful for in this flawed country, but this is also a day to mourn. This is a national holiday to remind us to mourn those who have fallen in war, whether or not you believe those wars were just or necessary. These books will break your heart over and again, any one of them will remind you of the cost of state violence, and how that cost is paid over generations. We should expand this holiday to include those who fought against America to defend American ideals from within, in wars that were never openly declared. I remember murdered civil rights leaders, labor leaders, and abolitionists. I remember our indigenous people who were killed for their land. But I also remember boys who somehow believed that the Vietnam War was a good war, and who didn’t live to learn that they were tools of unconscionable propaganda, and to teach their children to be better than they themselves had been. As Americans there is so much for us to mourn and to regret. I’m glad to mark this day not by grilling slaughtered animals and going to the beach, but looking through books, remembering our history, remembering the ideals we’ve fought for, no matter how polluted they have been by our own history, remembering how high are the stakes of peace, and confusedly thinking about what could ever make state violence feel necessary.

Join Rosanna Bruno and Anne Carson to discuss their new comic-book collaboration based on Euripides’s famous tragedy.

This collaboration between the visual artist Rosanna Bruno and the poet and classicist Anne Carson attempts to give a genuine representation of how human beings are affected by warfare. Therefore, all the characters take the form of animals (except Kassandra, whose mind is in another world)
