Bank Street Bookstore

Bank Street Bookstore "New York's best bookstore for and about children" --New York magazine

Bank Street Bookstore opened in 1970 in a small space in the lobby of the Bank Street College. Before long, the bookstore’s success necessitated a move to a larger location on the corner of 112th Street and Broadway. Originally intended as a small store serving the needs of the college community, the bookstore has grown into a resource for the neighborhood and for the community of parents and educ

ators worldwide. The last bastion of bookstores where the books are hand-selected and the sellers know their product. Andy Laties, the current manager, is the author of Rebel Bookseller: Why Indie Bookstores Represent Everything You Want to Fight for from Free Speech to Buying Local to Building Communities http://www.yippeeskippy.com/rebelbookseller/wordpress/?page_id=11

When we’re evaluating our libraries to make sure they’re inclusive, it’s so important to make sure that not only is there representation for Black children, but that those books aren’t all historical, biographical, etc. Here are some books we love with Black protagonists in a modern day setting. These wonderful books show Black kids experiencing joy, magic, adventure, every day milestones, etc!

Today, Bank Street’s Center on Culture, Race & Equity hosted a virtual Fireside Chat with Jacqueline Woodson. In a discussion on race-conscious and culturally grounded children’s literature, Jacqueline talked about her journey to becoming a writer, and shared her thought: “How does this nation have the audacity not to reflect me in this world?”. You can read more about her life in her award-winning biography, “Brown Girl Dreamjng”. Jacqueline gave a shout out to two early mirrors she experienced in books: “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” by Mildred D Taylor, and “Stevie” by John Steptoe. These two beautiful books are still in print, and are available through our website now.

Thank you so much to our customers who are purchasing anti-racism resources, both for themselves and to use with children! These titles are in high demand at bookstores across the country, so we are getting them in as soon as they are available and working to send them out ASAP! Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we can currently only have one staff member working at a time, so please bear with us. We are so glad you are joining us in this work, and look forward to sharing more books in the weeks ahead.
