''My musical career was an accident,'' Miss Adu said in an interview last week. ''When I started singing three years ago I was trying to be a menswear designer, and I did a little modeling to support myself. We all came out of the same nightclub scene in London. One day I was asked if I wanted to sing in a group, and I decided to try it. I have no technical training and am completely uneducated in music.” - Sade Adu to the New York Times, 1985 💎
Diamond Life went on to sell 6 million copies worldwide and was the best selling debut by a British female vocalist for 24 years. | Released July 16,1984

These have since been opened and 1 volume traveled the world with me in 2019. James Baldwin and his ‘Early Novels & Stories’ have been to Vienna, Rome, Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem, and Istanbul comfortably wrapped in a Coogi sweater for protection (not at all necessary for a Summer in Turkey). While these stories carried the emotional weight that surpassed my luggage, I was grateful for the opportunity to see myself in each of the characters James so fully and honestly brought to life. Both of these volumes were blessed and edited by Toni Morrison 🕊 who left us Summer 2019.

No better time than now to revisit volume 2 ‘Collected Essays’. I’m sure ‘The Fire Next Time’ will hit a little different. That’s the brilliance of James- his words find you when you need them most.

“You know, friends, that I do not lie to you when I tell you I have walked into the palaces of kings and queens and into the houses of presidents. And much more. But I cold not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad. And when I get mad, you know that I open my big mouth. And then look out, ‘cause when Josephine opens her mouth, they hear it all over the world.”- Josephine Baker, March on Washington 1963

a legendary performer in France, Berlin, and the entire world stage, mother to 12 adopted children, owner of a pet cheetah, recipient of the medal of resistance, secret agent, and a constant fighter for racial equality- Josephine Baker was larger than life. she was chosen to speak at the historic March on Washington in 1963. one of two women speakers. she cherished life and the liberties that were supposed to be granted to all people. born in St. Louis in 1906, her life and work were synonymous with love. happy birthday dearest Josephine ♡ 06.03

“We have formed an organization...to fight whoever gets in our way, to bring about the complete independence of people of African descent here in the Western Hemisphere, and first here in the United States, and bring about the freedom of these people by any means necessary.”
Happy Birthday to our dearest Brother Malcolm. Thank you. 🖤

“We younger Negro artist who create now intend express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn’t matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too. If colored people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure doesn’t matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow, strong as we know how, and we stand on top of the mountain, free within ourselves.” - Langston Hughes, 1926

“He’s the poet of dreams [...] He’s always looking forward and dreaming of what America can be, of what this world can be but not at the cost of being in denial of how things are. There’s a complicated world that he’s addressing in his poems.” - Renée Watson

Title | Napoleon Leading the Army Over the Alps by Kehinde Wiley, 2005 Oil on canvas
This portrait imitates the posture of the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte in Jacques-Louis David's painting Bonaparte Crossing the Alps at Grand-Saint-Bernard. The artist thereby confronts and critiques historical traditions that do not acknowledge Black cultural experience. Wiley presents a new brand of portraiture that redefines and affirms Black identity and simultaneously questions the history of Western painting.- BM
