🍂🌕 The Story Behind Mabon — and Why It Matters to Me 🌕🍂

Every year, as autumn begins to settle in, I find myself drawn to Mabon. There is something about the changing leaves, the cooler evenings, and the feeling of the Wheel turning that makes me slow down and reflect.

But I also think it is important to understand where the name Mabon actually comes from.

Mabon is a modern Pagan name for the Autumn Equinox, not the name of an ancient Celtic harvest festival. The name is connected to Mabon ap Modron, a figure from medieval Welsh mythology who appears in the story Culhwch and Olwen.

The modern Pagan celebration developed much later, particularly during the 20th century, when practitioners began shaping the Wheel of the Year into the seasonal framework many witches and Pagans follow today.

And honestly, I find that history beautiful.

It reminds me that our spiritual paths are living traditions. We can respect the ancient stories, learn from historical harvest customs, and still create meaningful practices for our lives today.

For me, Mabon isn't about pretending to recreate something perfectly preserved from ancient times.

It is about gratitude.

It is about recognizing what I have grown, honoring the lessons of the year, gathering what is worth carrying forward, and gently releasing what I no longer need.

The equinox brings its own powerful symbolism — a turning toward longer nights and the quieter half of the year.

So when I celebrate Mabon, I think about the past, but I also think about the present.

I light a candle.
I give thanks.
I look at the season around me.
And I remind myself that every ending carries the beginning of something new.

That is what Mabon means to me. 🌾🍁🌙

But a modern Pagan tradition inspired by older mythology, seasonal rhythms, and one of humanity's oldest practices of all:

pausing to be grateful for the harvest.
