And on the second slide, something I’ve talked about in our newsletter but not here on social media yet — that during some very not beautiful very not sunny days this spring, we thought we would need to close our beloved East Village joint sugar shoebox.
May was our 10-year anniversary on East 9th St and as we crunched numbers until our heads were spinning, it seemed like a good milestone, the right time to pack it all in in exchange for a simpler life. We talked to our landlords and made a plan, we told our staff that they were our priority and our closing would be on their timeline. We told a few customers.
And then….we both started feeling SO HORRIBLE. I thought I would feel relief, but I felt like garbage. What were we doing? The schlep is annoying, the margins are so slim. But a vegan confectionery palace in the best neighborhood in the best city in the entire world?!? So what if it’s hard? It’s also a huge joy. Life is hard and at least we have the joy. We adore our staff, our customers, our street. We’re so proud of what we make.
We crunched numbers again. We talked more. Our lease is up in two years, and we decided to stick it out at least until then, and assuming our landlords agree to good lease terms, we’re hoping to stay in place. It’s really tough!! But we are so, so much tougher. We’re so proud to be a vegan business that is staying open. We’re so grateful to all of you for giving us ten beautiful years together.
