We tested 10 popular synthetic braiding hair products, and the results were alarming. The toxic chemicals we detected put Black women at risk of serious health issues, including cancer, reproductive harm, hormone disruption, and respiratory problems. Braids are commonly worn for weeks or months, which can increase the health risks due to long exposure time.
Our investigation also found that there’s little to no oversight of the safety of synthetic braiding hair. "It's appalling that toxic chemicals are in these products with so little scrutiny from those who are supposed to protect people, like the FDA," says Oriene Shin, CR’s safety advocacy manager.
Join us in calling on the FDA to set strong safety standards and protect consumers from dangerous chemicals in synthetic braiding hair. Tap the link in our bio to sign the petition.
