From the lavish entry hall to the resplendent garden to the maximalist dining room, one could never mistake fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s stunning Calcutta home for a shrinking violet. On the contrary, its joyful maximalism is a testament to the magic that can happen when a renowned designer turns their attention to creating a home that represents the full range of an expansive aesthetic. In the lobby, a Burma teak staircase and yellow-and-white marble floors are watched over by a grand chandelier that sets the tone for the entire house. In the garden, populated with 4,000 plants, even the nooks are inlaid with mirrors and decorative pots. And in the dining room, the chintz-wrapped table is an apt canvas for a celebration of florals and crystalware, all topped, of course, by a dazzling chandelier.

Ceramist Carlos Otero’s NYC home is a study in elegant contrasts. In his home office, which also serves as the HQ for his interior design studio, Otero’s unglazed “Forms” stand at attention in a hybrid bookshelf/desk, where they keep iconic design books company. The mix of textures and earthy hues, punctuated by a ’50s rosewood chair covered in an orangey-red linen, makes the nook as much a visual feast as a productive workspace. We don’t know which we covet more: Otero’s unique stoneware sculptures—he cites Joan Miró and primitive architecture as influences—or the stunning vignette in which they’ve been placed.

Australian artist Kate Mayes has a thing for floral and jungle motifs, and many rooms are much happier as a result. Her paintings and limited-edition prints—made in and inspired by her coastal home in Victoria—bring major life and joy, not to mention a wash of rich colors that can serve as inspiration for everything from a reading nook to an entire palette. In this stunning room, her “So Glad You Made It” print serves as the backdrop and focal point for a study in blue-on-blue gorgeousness.

Charles Benjamin’s ode to the Abbaye de Chaalis hits us on so many levels: the appreciation for this decorative gem in the countryside north of Paris, alongside the yearning to travel spontaneously. Until then, we can revel from afar in the collection of Nélie Jacquemart-André, which includes paintings by Giotto, Tintoretto and other titans, not to mention a titanic furniture collection. In this room, we’re especially loving the ornate, gilded screen which breaks up the beautiful interior with such panache.

We’re dying for this pattern-on-pattern brilliance by 2021 designer Patrick Mele. Maximalism done right is a feast for the eyes, and Mele has delivered a banquet, with Adelphi Paper Hangings, LLC “Parakeets and Pearls” anchoring the floral fantasia. The custom bed is of course also designed by Mele, while we have Aspraes Limited to thank for the curtains and upholstery. With a bedroom this dreamy, bad dreams dare not enter.

When designer Sabine Marcelis, an Eindhoven graduate, and OMA architect Paul Cournet set out to design a Rotterdam loft to their exacting specifications, there was a good chance it would not look like most other lofts. Mission accomplished. The entirely distinctive space reflects their innovative, thoughtful sensibilities, especially the curved Pierre Paulin sofa in the main area. Its serpentine shape and pale pink hue create a satisfyingly surprising contrast with the loft’s spare aesthetic of exposed brick walls and cement floors. And the way the sofa hugs the circular rug just so, it’s a match made in design heaven.

A strong, unexpected color combination in an unexpected place=design magic. Based on Dulux’s 2019 Colour Palette, this tucked-away staircase spot comes into its own cloaked in Mondrian Blue, Mitchell Blue and, maybe our favorite paint color name, Old Money. Meanwhile, the piece by Stacey Rees amplifies the Memphis movement-like playfulness of the color contrasts, or maybe the paint hues amplify the art. Either way, the combination transforms a usually forgotten space into a feast for the eyes.

An “enchanted forest” is how Veranda Magazine describes this Greenwich, CT, home designed by the incomparable Miles Redd, and we couldn’t agree more. This custom-printed wallpaper panorama of the Italian countryside, complete with towering trees in the dramatic entrance hall, does indeed feel enchanted. We’d expect nothing less from Redd, the stalwart with his firm, Redd Kaihoi, who's known for a mastery of pattern and color and having a penchant for the theatrical. Another trademark: injecting cheeky whimsy into the traditional—see here the fabulous leopard print carpeting. Talk about a wow factor.
