A few days ago, I shared a reel from Barbara’s Bookstore to our stories about Barnes & Noble opening a new location in downtown Chicago, only one block away from them.
As Barnes & Noble announces an aggressive expansion plan to open 60 new stores across the country, I want to share the real reason why we’re seeing them pop up right next to thriving indie stores.
This practice is driven by what is known as location intelligence; where corporations leverage demographic and foot traffic data to target areas with already proven demand. By opening near an established independent shop, they essentially bypass the costly research phase, secure a guaranteed customer base, and take over the local indie’s market.
This is why, now more than ever, we need to continue to support our indie bookstores in our communities. Not everyone has a choice, but if you do, choose an indie bookstore
