For generations, Indigenous stories appeared on screen without Indigenous voices guiding the lens. Representation existed, but true control rarely did. That gap shaped how the world viewed Native communitiesโ€”and how Native youth learned to see themselves. ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿชถ
The first Oscar nomination for a film directed by an Indigenous North American creator marks a long-overdue shift. This moment goes beyond trophies or headlines. It represents authorship, truth, and the power to tell stories without outside filters distorting lived experience.
When Indigenous creators lead their own narratives, the stories carry authenticity, depth, and cultural truth that cannot be replicated. This milestone opens doorsโ€”but it also highlights how many voices are still waiting for the chance to be heard on their own terms.

The passing of the last Navajo Code Talker marks the end of an era defined by courage, brilliance, and unbreakable service. These heroes used their language to create an unbreakable code that helped win World War II. ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ
Despite facing discrimination at home, they offered their skills and loyalty without hesitation, changing the course of history through the power of culture and words. Their contribution remains one of the most remarkable acts of wartime communication.
Today, we honor the final member of this extraordinary group and the legacy carried by the language that protected a nation. ๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Oscar-winning Cherokee actor Wes Studi calls the Western genre U.S. โ€œmythology" built around genocide.
It โ€œmakes heroes out of absolute villains," he says.
"Over the years, whatโ€™s happened is, I think people, and especially Indian people, and other minorities that have been affected by the way that the United States of America was built, we began to put pressure on the storytellers of the world, in that, 'Hey, what about us? Did you uh, did you ever stop to think that no, we didnโ€™t disappear. You didnโ€™t kill all of us. And we are still here, we have developed, and we have been a large part of your development?' I think we need to start telling stories in a way that is real. Enough of these fairytales. Enough of this making heroes out of people that werenโ€™t actual heroes. Letโ€™s talk about the fact that our present and our future depends on a better recognition of our past. And I think that some filmmakers, some studios, caught the gist of that and began to move in a direction that is hopefully more true to what our population is.โ€
Again: โ€œWe need to start telling stories in a way that is real. Enough of these fairytales.
