The bodice construction and materials
-Burgundy Charmeuse Satin base layer
-Red/Black Organza bias strips
I started with the bodice base and pinning out individual bias strips. Although I was intending for the strips to create a straight line down the center front, as I started pinning the weaving of the strips over one another cause it to start shifting got the left side. I ultimately had to flip the bodice upside down in an attempt to save it as best as I could. This led to the center turning to an overlapping swirl like pattern. In order to tapper off on the sides and in the middle I continued shortening the strips as they began to overlap which resulted in a unique piece of wearable art!
The cape is made of a black embroidered netting. This also strayed from the initial sketch but for the better. While it was originally supposed to be a black embroidered netting with sequin flowers, my designer friend Liz made the suggestion to do it in black instead. It definitely makes the bodice stand out more which I love! I began draping the shoulder and sleeve pieces when I realized I needed to make an actual collar in order for it to hold itself in place. The back piece was then draped from a larger cape pattern to create the break for the lacing on the bodice to show through.
