Back in stock!

Full Circle is the story of a life in rebellion, as told by Ben Morea. From his beginnings growing up with jazz and he**in in a New York City ghetto and his turn to radical art and militant politics — which culminated in the late-‘60s push for “total revolution” vis-a-vis the notorious collectives Black Mask and Up Against the Wall Motherf**ker — to the lesser-known years following his disappearance into the wilderness and the path that led eventually to animism and his adoption into a Native American spiritual tradition, this epic narrative spans the whole of Morea’s life from 1941 to the present, reflecting on his remarkable experiences of struggle and its changing contours over eighty years.

Based on a series of conversations which began in 2020, it represents a monumental effort of transmission, that seeks to draw insight and inspiration from this life-long revolutionary journey and pass it on for the generations to come. What emerges is a unique form of literature blending oral history and legend in a playful philosophical dialogue, compelled by urgent and profound questions facing all of us who struggle for a better world today.

By Ben Morea and 1000 voices collective, edited by Ariel Uesseler. -Publisher

S T A F F P I X feature : Edie

“Hey! I’m Edie. I hope you too love this place …I’ve been frequenting it and obsessing over the infinite inventory for many years (especially in my zine-obsessed teenagehood). Now, I work here! I am a performance artist, a printmaker, and an avid appreciator of artists’ books (and an occasional creator of them). I am also a collector of weird items so, by default, am aesthetically a maximalist; Printed Matter is the perfect excessive, vibrant, grandiose counterpart to that part of me…”

Armed By Design by Interference Archive
Slides # 1 - # 3: “In 1966, 500 anti-imperial and anti-colonial revolutionary leaders from 82 countries congregated in Havana, Cuba, for the first ever solidarity conference…the Tricontinental Conference… bridged National Liberation movements, communist parties, and socialist states in developing tangible solidarity networks and blueprints for combatting US imperialism; out of this conference came the Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAAL). Out of its headquarters in Havana, shortly thereafter, OSPAAAL began producing hundreds of aesthetically striking and politically inciting posters, magazines, books, publications. This book, created with the support of Brooklyn’s very own Interference Archive (go visit it on 7th st. in Park Slope!), delves deep into the history of OSPAAAL’s cultural production and its resounding lasting impacts. There is SO much to learn from the way that these revolutionaries mobilized design and cultural production in order to amass a revolutionary consciousness and solidarity…”

For the Love of Joan Jett Blakk by Mattazine Society
Slides # 4 - # 6: “In the truest of fanzine spirit, Mattazine Society creates staple-bound, hand collaged + xeroxed homages to some of the absolute—though perhaps lesser known—greats. This one is about Joan Jett Blakk, a drag queen, writer, performer, and political candidate—she ran for presidency (and simultaneously office of First Lady) in 1992 with the campaign slogan “Lick Bush in ‘92!”…

SIGNED COPIES - The Wonderful World That Almost Was” by

“As official narratives everywhere strain and crack, Peter and Paul—and Durbin—offer a desperately needed alternative way of seeing and being.” —Benjamin Moser, author of Susan Sontag: Her Life and Work, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

“[Andrew Durbin] has made of these lives and these times a jam-packed poem in prose. It’s like a trip with these guys, without pulling tight at the ending, just death.” —Eileen Myles, author of A “Working Life”.

The cinematic, never-before-told story of two intimately entangled artists who redefined q***r art.

When Paul Thek met Peter Hujar in the winter of 1956 in Coral Gables, Florida, a slow-simmering connection began to burn. Thek, twenty-three and living in Miami, was handsome and itching to make it as a painter; in the twenty-two-year-old Hujar, a shy, sensual photographer, he’d found a kindred spirit. By 1960, they were dating and living in New York, beginning decades of s*x, love, competition, and reconciliation—an entanglement that changed American art forever.

Surrounded by a robust creative scene populated by Susan Sontag, Andy Warhol, Fran Lebowitz, John Waters, and David Wojnarowicz, Thek and Hujar’s profoundly influential careers, from the early 1960s through the late 1980s, differed as much as the men themselves. The unpredictable and often overlooked Thek crafted visceral installations and sculptures, while Hujar, celebrated and sociable, took penetrating portraits of his world, q***r and otherwise. Yet even at their most estranged, and even after their deaths from AIDS, both men were united by a pursuit of liberation—from artistic and s*xual limits, from anything short of changing the world.

Andrew Durbin’s The Wonderful World That Almost Was unravels, for the first time, the intertwined stories and work of two boundary-burning, paradigm-tilting, never more relevant American artists. Weaving together deft art criticism with moving portraits of both men’s inner lives, and assembled with exhaustive research, Durbin’s book is an ode to a lost but still-living world—and two men who defined it. -Publisher

GUTS, with an introduction by Essence Harden, is a 120-page offering of Jarvis’s inner world; an unfolding of florals, self-portraits, double exposures, and editorial images that resist a fixed narrative. Instead, they function as reflective pauses, grounded in the act of noticing beauty in unexpected places.

Flowers signal perseverance and the instinct to grow against all odds, while editorial portraits blur into self-portraiture, shaped by Jarvis’s hand and presence. Water, windows, and reflections recur throughout, holding a tension between how we believe we are seen and how we see ourselves.

Made across South Africa, Greece, Korea, New York, Japan, California, and the Pacific Northwest, GUTS is a meditation on reflection, perseverance, and veneration—of nature, emotion, and the quiet moments that shape how we move through the world. -Publisher

About: Lemonade is a fun-sized magazine that charts alternative courses through the cosmic chaos. It doesn’t promise to change the world but invites you to rethink daily practices and your relationship with the big, giant, totalistic apparatus that underpins everything. Through a series of interviews with designers, artists, and thinkers, each issue explores critical connections between a multiplicity of ideas from the past and present. It’s a playful wrench in an insane system – a way of living, being, and perceiving. Grow out your hair, grab a copy of Lemonade, and free yourself from the ego’s twisted grip.

S T A F F P I X feature : Mollie

“I’m Mollie, Printed Matter’s Director of Finance and HR Administration. I’m new to the organization and very excited to be here and sharing some of my favorite artist books. I’ve worked with artists in NYC for almost two decades and look forward to continuing the work of lifting up artistic practice at Printed Matter.”

How to Survive After Art School, Olivier Bertrand, Clémence Fontaine and Chloé Horta
Slides # 1- # 3: “You graduated from arts school, so now what? In How to Survive After Art School, you will find short and quirky advice from a multitude of contributors for taking steps to build a life and thrive while honoring your artistic practice. While the advice is geared towards artists, I recommend it for everyone. It’s a short and essential read for anyone seeking out stability while creating community and creative opportunity.”

Light Blue Desire by Magali Duzant
Slides # 4 - # 6: “Magali Duzant’s delicate investigation into the place the color blue holds in both language and society is a delight. Charting the history of the color blue, starting with the absence thereof, the book is sprinkled with idioms containing the word “blue” in multiple languages. By examining a singular color, Magali creates a meditative space to sink into.”

Featured today: the innovative zines of Margaux Bigou!

was born in New Caledonia and draws on her island origins as she creates her illustrations. She seeks out her creatures hiding under shells, buried in warm sand, or lying in the depths of the sea.

Her slippery and melancholic monsters can’t stand the heat and take refuge in experimental editions that blend screenprinting, riso printing, and patience.
