Incubated in the 1990s and ongoing, Janet Taylor Pickett’s AKIMBO EXOTICA is a body of painted collages featuring Janet Taylor Pickett’s cut-out dress forms on botanical illuminated manuscripts.  The transient flora and fauna are solemn and meditative, buoyant and animated, and vessels of meaning and captured memories. AKIMBO EXOTICA is a portal to the past that declares its story while retaining a patina of mysticism and abstraction—the ownership of Black beauty.

THE CORPSES
For almost two decades and ongoing, painter Laura Bell and poet Ian Ganassi have been mailing between them the collaborative collage/assemblage series THE CORPSES, a title derived from the Surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse.  Pop culture, politics, religion, and poetry appear, and recurring images and phrases create echoes and connections. Called “joyously Fluxus-like” by Robert Shuster in the Village Voice and described by writer H. Byron Earhart as going “beyond collaborative to a kind of conspiratorial imagination,” each piece reflects a process that has retained its initial sense of play, while also reflecting battles over the obliteration of a passage of paint or text or the declaring of a piece finished.

Yooah Park’s “Void in Writing” is a sculptural mobile of the artist’s invented hieroglyphs made of laser-cut stainless steel suspended by piano strings. The work critically analyzes the fundamental nature of communication, raising important questions about its significance when communicative acts devolve into empty gestures.
