Heinrich Knopf, whose bows compare in playability to the finest French bows of the period, is widely regarded as one of the greatest 19th-century German bow makers. Only a few known examples of viola bows exist, which, combined with the excellent condition of this example, makes it truly exceptional. Every part of the bow is original except for the hair and lapping. Interestingly, a large body of the late bows of Nicolaus Kittel (often referred to as the 'Russian Tourte') were made by H. Knopf, who was commissioned by the Kittel family to produce the bows. Please note that the silver parts of the frog and button remain unpolished in order to preserve the patina. Leaving the silver unpolished adds a dimension of character and provides a more natural appearance.

Francois Nicolas Voirin's extraordinary aesthetic sensibility along with his artistic ex*****on are shown beautifully in this ivory and gold mounted violin bow. Branded JB Vuillaume from around 1860, this is the only documented example of an ivory and gold mounted Voirin bow made for Vuillaume with the Vuillaume style frog. The photo of the head without the hair provides a well-preserved view of the head mortice in original condition. One of the most significant French bowmakers, Voirin would continue to influence bowmakers well into the 20th century.

Bow enthusiasts! Sorry for our hiatus but we are back and have so many beautiful bows to share. The joy of collecting extraordinary bows comes from the rare opportunities to study bows that even after 200 years can still reveal so much of the maker's hand. For example, this pristine Tourte cello bow that shows an abundance of original tool marks from this legendary maker. Tourte was a master and innovator of his time and this bow includes the original silver head plate that allows us to view the head as Tourte made it.
