ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Michael Hickerson ()

Michael Hickerson is the creative force behind “Designs by Michael,” a vibrant, fun wearable art brand.

Hickerson specializes in handcrafted hats and statement fascinators that help clients feel confident, joyful and unforgettable.

Prior to Designs By Michael, Hickerson was a social worker. He has dedicated his life to cultivating spaces and programs that support the black gay community in southern Louisiana.

Hickerson was one of the first African Americans to integrate gay krewes and gay balls in the 1970s.

Since then, Hickerson has been selected Queen of several krewes, was the director of Gay Pride, served as grand marshal of Southern Decadence and has devoted time and energy to fundraising and advocating for HIV/AIDS organizations and services.

You can learn more about this important history in Howard Philip Smith’s book, “Unveiling the Muse: The Lost History of Gay Carnival in New Orleans.”

Designs by Michael’s latest collection is a celebration of the abundance of spring: flowers, bright colors and local music festivals 🎶

Visit the Museum Store to purchase these one-of-a-kind head pieces for yourself!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Sylvester West ()

Sylvester West is a 26-year-old luxury fashion designer from New Orleans.

West learned how to sew at age 12 at ricRACK (), creating a pair of shorts and a long sleeve shirt. At 15, he worked on his first film set in the design department. Since then, his custom beaded gowns and suits have been worn on red carpets, concert stages and most recently by the 2026 Mardi Gras King and Queen of Zulu, Dr. Ron Tassin () and Sharell Chatman ().

West was commissioned to design looks in coordination with Zulu’s theme, “Coming to America.”

In an Instagram caption West writes, “[the purple] dress was born from a vision of elegance shaped by beauty and pain…Through softness and structure, she blossoms.” Various looks in the collection took him between 6 and 36 hours to create.

Visit the Center for Southern Craft & Design, located in the Museum Store, to view Sylvester West’s royal collection.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: “The River Will Be a Part of Us” by Justus Wayne Thomas

Photographer Justus Wayne Thomas documents an unforgettable adventure from Kansas City to New Orleans during the summer of 1981.

The “motley crew of young people from the United States and Germany,” Thomas describes, floated down the Missouri and Mississippi River aboard a hand-crafted raft named after a traveling jester in medieval German folklore, “Eulenspiegel.”

You can experience this journey through Thomas’ photographs and the crew’s anecdotes in “The River Will Be a Part of Us.” His book is available for purchase in-store or online. Click the link in our bio to access our online store.
