Wynford Dewhurst was not his real name.

He was born Thomas Edward Smith to a Manchester family, trained for the law, then left it for painting and took the name by deed poll while enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme, one of Impressionism's fiercest opponents. His 1904 book was the first serious history of the movement written in English, and he dedicated it to Monet. The argument served a purpose: British painters working in the style were, as he put it, sneered at for imitating a foreign one. Pissarro conceded that Turner and Constable had been useful, then insisted the basis of the art was French.

Walasse Ting built his compositions from color first and line second.

Signed with the artist's seal, this watercolor on rice paper assembles elongated female figures among blossoms, foliage and a scarlet parrot. The spare linework recalls traditional Chinese figural painting, while the saturated pigment reflects two forces Ting absorbed abroad: the CoBrA circle he fell in with after arriving in Paris in 1952, and the Pop artists he encountered once he settled in New York.

Ting received the Guggenheim Fellowship for Drawing in 1970. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

Painted in 1934 and documented as leaving Mexico that same year, Mother and Child has passed through American and Canadian private collections ever since. Rivera worked here in tempera on plaster, his "portable mural" technique, giving the surface the color stability and luminosity of true fresco. At nearly three feet high, the bond between mother and child becomes the entire subject.

Comparable works reside in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.

The inscription translates roughly to “History is written not for display but in the interests of strict truth” — a fitting line for the muse heralded as the Proclaimer of historical truths. Carved by a student under Raffaello Romanelli’s direction in the early 20th century, this neoclassical marble pairs pure white stone with robes of Siena marble, the daring polychrome approach that separated Raffaello from his father Pasquale.

The base confirms it: “Executé sous la Direction du Prof. Romanelli.”

The fan may be the most demanding format the Impressionists ever attempted.

Folding fans had been in Europe since the 16th century, but the Japonisme of the 1870s pushed artists to treat the shape as a genuine problem: a half-moon that refuses a horizon line. Degas wanted a room devoted to fans at the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition of 1879. He got 21 across three artists, his own five, four by Jean-Louis Forain and twelve by Camille Pissarro, who returned to the format more often than anyone.

Before every great artist, there was an artist they admired.

For Vincent van Gogh, that artist was Léon Augustin Lhermitte. In letters to his brother Theo, Van Gogh confessed he was "too preoccupied" by Lhermitte to discuss anything else, even requesting reproductions of his work and praising his mastery of the figure. A leading voice of French Naturalism, Lhermitte devoted his career to dignified scenes of rural labor, rendered with a draftsman's precision and a painter's warmth. His fields, harvesters and village wells shaped how a generation saw the working countryside.

In Summer Evening, Edward Alfred Cucuel (1875-1954) depicts two fashionable women lingering in a rowboat on a tranquil lake, enveloped in shimmering water, distant hills and dappled foliage. A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts, the San Francisco-born painter later joined Munich’s Scholle group under Leo Putz, where he refined the luminous plein air style that placed him among the finest American Impressionists.

His works reside in institutional collections from England to Minnesota — a testament to his enduring mastery of light and leisure.

Hiver bleu by André Brasilier reveals how the artist transforms a familiar winter scene into something hushed and dreamlike. Two riders and their horses cross a snowbound path beneath a grove of trees rendered in vibrating blue, a signature device of Brasilier's expressionist style. Brasilier has called the horse "a superb creation... charged with symbolism, strength, dynamism and beauty," a philosophy that runs throughout his work. Only two living artists have received a retrospective at the Hermitage Museum. Brasilier is one of them.
