M is for Melanated Docs—Conceived in Omaha, NE during the years of 2010-2014 and birthed in 2020, Melanated Docs’ mission is to inspire, uplift and motivate current and future doctors of color.

The founders are Dr. Keisha Butler and Dr. Catrina Johnson. Dr. Butler is a general dentist who currently practices in NYC at a Federally Qualified Health Center. She focuses on providing access to quality dental care to disadvantaged and marginalized members of the community.
Dr. Catrina Johnson is a a board-certified anesthesiologist practicing at a level one trauma center in Illinois.

Through candid conversations and open discussions MD’s desire is to advocate for and ultimately increase diversity in healthcare. The duo values inclusion and collaboration and provides invaluable resources for others traveling along this path.

The podcast “Confessions of Melanated Docs” is a platform where Dr. Butler and Dr. Johnson share their perspectives on their journeys to and throughout professional school. They offer insight into their unique experiences and discuss current challenges.

Before becoming Melanated Docs, Drs. Butler and Johnson were just two Melanated girls from the south trying to find their way. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a little hard work, perseverance, discipline, and determination.

H is for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. is a grass roots, non-profit organization founded by graduate . Their mission is to promote awareness of, increase attendance to and ultimately graduation from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Through their two main programs, HBCU Prospects and HBCU Rookies, they provide college and career development to high school and college students.

Did you know…

•Although HBCUs make up less than 3% of the country’s colleges and universities, they enroll 10% of all African American students and produce approximately 22% of all African American graduates.

•Approximately 25% of African American graduates with STEM degrees come from HBCUs.

•Eight HBCUs were among the top 20 institutions to award the most science and engineering bachelor’s degrees to black graduates from 2008-2012.

•On average, the cost of attendance at an HBCU is 28% less than attending a comparable non-HBCU.

•52% of first generation African American college students attend HBCUs

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. When they ask if HBCU’s are still relevant??
