LEGEND!! Hear from our man Burt from The 5 Capes, Seaburban Around Alone. Solo, non-stop circumnavigation!!!!
My name is Bert. On July 18th 2020, I arrived back in Victoria BC after completing a 265 day, solo, non-stop circumnavigation via the 5 Great Capes using only traditional navigational tools. That is to say, no electronic positioning finding whatsoever. I became only the 9th person in history and the first North or South American to complete such a voyage using only a sextant, watch, tables, and almanac.
The success of my circumnavigation is due in no small part to the Schaefer furlers I had installed on Seaburban. I used a Schaefer 3100 on the forestay and a 2100 on a Solent some 3 feet or so inboard of the forestay. There are no words to describe the abuse that those furlers stood up to. Time and time again, I literally bet my life on your gear while sailing more than 15,000 nautical miles in the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties. I did everything you are not supposed to do with a roller reefing headsail in conditions that beggar description. Both furlers never failed me. Today, after more than 28,800 miles, they look and perform as good as new.
I am writing to thank you and Schaefer Marine for producing a truly exceptional product. It is said that the sea will find every weakness and expose any shortcut. If that is indeed true, then sea itself has not found the Schaefer 3100 and 2100 furlers on Seaburban wanting in the least. For me, I would never go to sea without any other furler gear no matter if it’s around the bay or around the world.
In fact, I’ve installed another 2100 on the inner forestay. I flew a storm jib on the inner forestay when circumnavigating and I wished at every moment that I had that sail set, that I had a furler on that stay. There were times that at 48 sq. ft., my smallest hank-on jib was way too much for conditions. Going forward to set or hand that sail on those days was something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. Being able to easily furl or reef even the tiniest storm jib is more than just peace of mind. It might very well save you, the boat, or both. I wouldn’t consider anything other than a Schaefer for the job.
If there’s ever anything I can do to pay Schaefer Marine back - or forward as the case may be - for contributing to my voyage’s success, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks again.
