HE TRADED A HELICOPTER FOR A BROOM. AND HE NEVER LOOKED BACK.

Kris Kristofferson had it all mapped out. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. A Captain in the U.S. Army. A trained helicopter pilot.

His family expected him to teach literature at West Point. The path to a comfortable, prestigious life was paved in gold. But Kris didn’t want comfort. He wanted the song.

So, he did the unthinkable. He resigned his commission. He turned down the teaching job. His family disowned him for it.

He moved to Nashville and took a job sweeping floors at Columbia Studios. Imagine that. A man who could quote William Blake and fly a military chopper... emptying ashtrays just to hear Bob Dylan record. People thought he was crazy. "You gave up everything to be a janitor?" they asked.

Kris just smiled. He knew something they didn't. He knew that the only way to write the truth was to live it—from the bottom up. He swept those floors until he could land a helicopter on Johnny Cash’s lawn just to get him to listen to a tape.

He didn’t lower himself. He grounded himself. And from that ground, he grew into the greatest songwriter of his generation. Sometimes, you have to lose your way to find your voice.

A teacher once predicted John Bonham would either become a dustman or a millionaire. And one day, it took Led Zeppelin 48 telegrams to convince the greatest drummer in rock history to even join the band.

John Bonham started drumming on containers and tins at 5 years old, in Redditch, England. His mother gave him a real snare drum at 10, and his father handed him a full kit at 15. He never took a single formal lesson. He just watched other drummers and figured the rest out himself.

His school headmaster clearly noticed something unusual about him, for better or worse. On one of his report cards, the headmaster wrote a line that turned out to be strangely accurate: Bonham would either end up a dustman or a millionaire.

By his mid-teens, Bonham was already playing in local bands around Birmingham, building a loud, aggressive reputation behind the kit that some band leaders loved and others found completely overwhelming. He worked briefly as an apprentice carpenter alongside his father, drumming in between jobs, never entirely sure which path was actually going to pay the bills.

Here's the part almost nobody expects.

By 1968, Bonham had built a strong enough reputation as a session and touring drummer that he was turning down more work than he could take. When guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant were putting together a brand-new band, soon to become Led Zeppelin, Plant personally recommended Bonham for the drum seat.

Bonham said no.

He was already earning solid, reliable money playing with singer Tim Rose and picking up other session work. A brand-new, unproven band wasn't an obvious upgrade. So Page and manager Peter Grant kept pushing. Reports vary on the exact number, but accounts describe roughly 48 separate telegrams sent to Bonham, trying to convince him to change his mind.

He finally said yes.

The four musicians played together for the first time at a small record store in London, running through a cover of "Train Kept A Rollin'." John Paul Jones later said he knew instantly, the moment he heard Bonham play, that the band was going to be something enormous.

He was right. Led Zeppelin went on to become one of the best-selling and most influential rock bands in history, and Bonham's drumming, thunderous, precise, and completely unmatched by his peers, became one of the defining sounds of the entire genre. Rolling Stone later named him the greatest drummer of all time.

Bonham struggled privately with the pressures of constant touring and battled alchl for years. On September 25, 1980, he died at 32. Led Zeppelin disbanded two months later, saying they couldn't continue without him.

A teacher once guessed Bonham's life would land on one extreme or the other. It landed, briefly and unforgettably, on both.

This photo of Howlin’ Wolf’s oversized fist reminds me of a story Jimmy Rogers told me: Wolf threatened someone by saying “You’re running for something and I’m going to elect you.” Any suggestions for a contemporary candidate?
