This hymn’s writer has one of the best names I’ve ever heard. Maltbie Davenport Babcock

This is my Father's world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas--
His hand the wonders wrought.

God didn't have to give us color. He could have just kept this entire world in black and white if he had chosen. I think about that all the time. When some color catches my eye and takes my breath away, I don't take that for granted. Clearly! LOL! I am a maximalist in favor of all of the colors!

You need to know this hymn: “Be still my Soul”

It’s a masterpiece of poetry. It is a hymn for the deepest sorrow. It is a hymn for the darkest of days. The hardest grief. This hymn can meet you there. It has met me many times when I’ve been at my sickest. The words were able to reach my deep pain and bring comfort, when nothing else would bring comfort.

We know very little of the German author of this hymn. Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel was born in 1697. The date of her death is unknown. She might have come from an aristocratic family, based on her name. Not much is known about her life—only that she was connected to a small court in Köthen, Germany, and may have become a Lutheran nun.

The Hymn “Stille, mein Wille; dein Jesus hilft siegen" published in a collection entitled Neue Sammlung geistlicher Lieder (A new collection of spiritual songs) in 1752, one of several of her texts included there.

Jane Borthwick, who was Scottish, translated the hymn into English 103 years later. Jane translated and published many German hymns under the pseudonym: H. L. L. (Hymns from the Land of Luther). “Be Still My Soul” is her most well known hymn translation.

It’s fascinating to think about how hymns are translated—just like Bible translation - there can be so many variations! Translators have to balance accuracy of the translation with trying to preserve the beauty and poetry of the original.

What a precious gift Katharina gave the church by putting together the laments of the Psalms with the goodness of God. And God blessed Jane with such a talent for the art of hymn translation. I hope this hymn blesses you too.

The “How Great Thou Art” tea towel has consistently stayed in our top 5 bestselling towels for 4 years.

Now this history of this Gospel song is so interesting that made its way through several countries before arriving at the United States.

Starting in Sweden in 1886, caught in a thunderstorm, Pastor Carl Boberg was so very moved by the power and peace that followed, he dropped to his knees in awe. And that moment inspired him to write O Store Gud in 1886—the Swedish poem that became How Great Thou Art.

Next in Germany in 1907, Manfred von Glehn (1867-1924) translated the text from the Swedish into German. It became the hymn, "Du großer Gott, wenn ich die Welt betrachte.” The Google translation to English is “O mighty God, when I behold the world”

And onto Russia 20 years later. Ivan S. Prokhanoff translated the song from German to Russian.

British missionary Stuart K. Hine encountered the Russian version in the 1930s while traveling through Ukraine. Inspired by the dramatic natural beauty and stories of faith, he wrote new English verses. Each stanza was inspired by real moments—thunderstorms, quiet forests, and testimonies from villagers and refugees. Hine published his version in 1953.

Okay to recap.
It was written in Swedish in 1886.
Translated from Swedish to German in 1907.
Translated from German to Russian in 1927.
Finally translated from Russian to the English version we know in 1953.

Hymn for Sunday: The King of Love my Shepherd is.

Sir Henry Williams Baker, vicar and hymnwriter, was on his deathbed in 1877 and his last words were:

“Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love He sought me,
And on His shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.”

These words come from the hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is”, which he wrote —inspired by Psalm 23, written for the second edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1868.

For over 30 years, he served in a quiet parish in Herefordshire, England.

There are so many gems to be found in this hymn, but my favorite part of this hymn is the last verse:

“And so through all the length of days,
thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
within thy house forever.”

This hymn I think should be ranked in the top 20 of popular hymns. And that way if it was, I could make this into a tea towel! HA! But until then, we have this peaceful hymn available as an art print. Consider adding to your gift basket for your mother.

Have you heard this hymn before?
