Bluegrass wasn’t something I connected with at first.

I grew up on rock, big sound, big energy, all of that.

But over time, my ears started changing.

I found myself paying more attention to the story inside the song… how it gets passed down, how people play it differently every time, how it somehow feels new even though it’s old.

Now it feels less like fast picking and more like a group of people sitting in a circle, figuring something out together.

That’s what pulled me in.

If you’ve ever wanted to play with someone else but didn’t know where to start, keep it simple:

• pick one song
• play slower than you think you should
• don’t worry about sounding perfect
• take turns leading

That’s it.

It doesn’t need to be a performance. It’s just a conversation.

And honestly, that’s where the fun is.

This one started as a “what if…”

What if we didn’t just add a pickup, what if we built a fully electric version from the ground up?

Pickups, tone control, the whole thing.

Some of the early ideas were… a little wild 😅

But it’s starting to come together now, and I’ve been plugging in a prototype and running it through pedals.

It’s a completely different sound world.

Still early, but it’s coming.

There’s always a moment where things feel like they’re not working.

You’re playing slowly, it’s a bit clunky, and it doesn’t sound like music yet.

That’s the part most people don’t see.

But if you stay there, just long enough, something clicks.

And suddenly you’re not thinking about every movement anymore. You’re just playing.

That shift is closer than it feels.

Most people think a capo just changes the key.

But on a dulcimer guitar, it actually changes the whole feel of what you’re playing.

Move it up one fret at a time and you’ll hear it shift:
• darker
• brighter
• almost minor
• then suddenly really open

Same melody. Different headspace every time.

It’s one of the easiest ways to get unstuck creatively.

Most of these instruments live in DAD tuning, and for good reason, it sounds great and it’s easy to work with.

But years ago, there used to be a version tuned down into G.

Then it disappeared.

And if you’ve ever tried forcing a standard instrument into that range, you’ll know… it doesn’t really love it.

So we started working on ways to bring that back properly.

Because when you hear it in that lower G range, it’s warmer, fuller, and just sits differently.

Same instrument. Completely different mood.

I meant to play the other day.

Then life happened.

Kids needed help with homework, something else came up, and by the time everything settled down… I just needed sleep.

Sound familiar?

That’s usually the real reason people stop playing. Not because they can’t, just because life gets full.

That’s why I always say: if you can find 10 minutes here and there, that’s enough to keep things moving.

It doesn’t have to be perfect to count.

If you’re just starting out, here’s something I wish more people heard:

You don’t need to learn everything.

You need to learn:
• how to hold it comfortably
• how to keep a steady strum
• one simple melody

That’s enough to get momentum.

From there, things build a lot faster than you expect.

Most people don’t get stuck because it’s too hard, they get stuck because they try to do too much at once.

I get this question a lot:
“What does chromatic actually mean?”

It sounds technical, but it’s pretty simple.

A traditional dulcimer is diatonic, think of it like the white keys on a piano. It’s designed so it’s hard to hit a wrong note, which is why it’s so approachable.

A chromatic dulcimer adds in the “missing” notes, like the black keys.

Same tuning. Same feel.

But now you can play in any key without working around the instrument.

So it’s not about one being better than the other, it just depends on what you want to do.

I picked up my first dulcimer guitar on my honeymoon in Asheville, North Carolina. Completely on a whim.

It was this small, handmade instrument from a shop called Woodrow, tucked away in the mountains. I’d spent years playing guitar at that point, so I wasn’t exactly looking for something new… but there was something about it.

It didn’t feel intimidating. It felt… inviting.

Like it was asking you to play, not perform.

I didn’t realise it at the time, but that one moment ended up shaping everything that came after, including what we’re building here now.

Funny how that works.
