"Unique" barely scratches the surface to describe this bike.

I started riding MTB's in 1987, so I was a little late to the game.

However, I quickly realized what a game changer they were.

Coming from an aquatics background to me it was similar to the difference between swimming and water polo.

Swimming makes you fitter, faster, and improves endurance.

Water polo is where you get to use those attributes to have fun and use the intangibles to be successful.

The biggest difference between aquatics and cycling is the equipment.

An athlete needs a reasonably competitive AND reliable bicycle in order to achieve success.

Mountain bikes have always been evolving, adapting, and companies each have their own style of how to approach problems encountered in testing or in the field.

The origin of FRM Bike Technology was the founder, Franco Ricci Magnani, was to bring the MTB back to his homeland of Italy.

As a result, they have always been pushing the boundaries of performance with advanced materials, creating bikes that are light, but don't sacrifice durability or performance.

This approach continues to serve them well and now can benefit riders in the U.S.A.

All that glistens.... etc. The gold fabric covering the Anakin XC MTB from FRM Bike Technology is called Zylon®.

It is an alternative to their Dyneema® fabric covering the Anakin, each having different ride qualities to further tailor the riding and ownership experience.

In this case, Zylon® provides better vibration damping and comfort than the Dyneema, optimal for endurance riders.

There are multiple other advantages of such a finish.

Neither Zylon® nor Dyneema® requires paint in order to protect the Toray T800 carbon fiber beneath from incidental impacts, as well as UV damage.

It also reduces overall weight by eliminating between 150 - 200 grams of paint.

Oh, and yes, it looks amazing.

This bicycle is the Volata, from FRM Bike Technology, and it is beautiful.

But the structure is very carefully conceived.

Modern aero road bicycles present a variety of engineering challenges.

All technical designs are a result of many compromises.

In the case of aero road bikes, ease of assembly and general serviceability are often compromised in favor of less drag. On a human powered vehicle every watt matters when a rider is at the limit.

Another thing that sometimes becomes sacrificed is the beauty or cohesiveness of the resulting design.

One of the reasons I have often collaborated with bespoke Italian bike builders is that they are often able to synergize purpose, performance, as well as stunning aesthetics.

I will be peeling back the layers of the onion on each of the 4 models offered by FRM.

Yes, only 4 models. Each special and unique in the current marketplace.

Production volume is limited.

All are numbered pieces, created through the active collaboration of myself, the rider, and the factory which is located in the Motor Valley of Italy.
