Our founders, Bill and Andy, had a summer home in Madequecham Valley affectionally referred to as the “Shack”, that looked right out onto the ocean. A former bathhouse from the late 1800’s, the home was primitive, yet elegant and well curated, filled with natural fiber rugs, handwoven textiles, found objects, artwork and lots of fresh air. Life at the Shack was the epitome of island living: a swim in the ocean, followed by an outdoor shower and a martini at golden hour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The colors that surrounded the Shack — fog gray, sea blues, the sage greens of the brush, the weathered browns of the shingles — became the palette of Nantucket Looms. And the objects that Bill and Andy collected, made by hand and passed down with stories of their origin, are the foundation of what we now call Nantucket cottage style.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we think of the Shack, we think of slower days spent outside, at the mercy of the tides and the light, with the ocean always somewhere in view. Surrounded by beauty indoors and out. With summer on the horizon, we can’t think of a better way to spend it than the way Bill and Andy did.

On behalf of our business partners at Nantucket Looms—Bess Clarke, Stephanie Hall, Becky Peraner, and Liz Winship—we are delighted to award this year’s Nantucket Looms Scholarship to Carly Ray. She will be attending Iowa State University this fall pursuing a degree in interior design.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This scholarship was established to encourage Nantucket students to pursue their creative passions and carry forward the island’s tradition of artistry, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design. We believe that creative work enriches our community and helps preserve the unique character and spirit of Nantucket.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Carly, we are honored to support you as you begin this next chapter and look forward to seeing where your talents take you.

Featured in our book “Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style”, this historic 1794 home, named Feather’s nest, shows that nautical style can be much more than anchors and rope details. Thoughtful and layered, the interiors draw on Nantucket’s maritime history in a way that feels collected and personal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Throughout the home, Nantucket Looms Interiors used the classic coastal palette of red, white, and blue while introducing richer and more subtle shades. Vintage and antique pieces — like the “Just Ahead” sign above the original fireplace — are mixed with contemporary art and textiles, creating a balance between old and new that honors the home’s history while making it feel fresh and livable today.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The attic, with its high shiplap ceilings and exposed beams, was a natural place to explore this coastal style even further. Full of texture and character, the space captures the relaxed spirit of seaside living while staying true to the home’s historic roots.

From artwork, to jewelry to small collectibles, we always think the best gifts to give or receive are the ones you love so much, they get passed down.

As we prepare to celebrate the important women in our lives this Mother’s Day, we asked a few members of the Looms family to share the pieces that have been passed down from their mothers, and the ones they are already setting aside for their daughters. There’s a tradition at Nantucket Looms that takes place before most of the island has fully woken up. For 58 years, our mornings have begun not with customers, but with artists—arriving between nine and ten, arms full of carefully wrapped work, ready to knock on the front door before the shop officially opens.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a ritual that has shaped how we work, how we curate, and how we build lasting relationships with the artists we represent. In an age of emails and digital submissions, this tradition may feel old-fashioned. To us, it remains essential.

In 1968, founders Bill Euler and Andy Oates were inspired by the classic shirt jacket worn by chief petty officers in the US Navy — and asked island tailor Lia Marks to bring that vision to life using Nantucket Looms handwoven tweed. At the time, Lia was already sewing what the shop called “whaling shirts” — patterned shirts made with real ivory buttons — so the collaboration was a natural next step. On an island shaped by maritime tradition, it was an immediate and perfect fit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each one was hand-sewn and lined in Liberty of London fabric — a different print every time, perfectly tailored to the person wearing it. No two were alike, and that was entirely the point.

Even icons like Dustin Hoffman and Tom Selleck had CPO jackets, getting fitted for them right in the shop. Over five decades, Lia made well over 10,000 of them. She passed away in 2022, just after her 97th birthday.

Throughout the years, many customers and friends would stop by the shop, wearing their original CPO jackets the purchased back in the day, still in perfect condition.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After many requests, we brought it back. We still weave the tweed in our studio and line every jacket with Liberty of London. Our seamstress follows Lia’s original patterns, upholding her unparalleled level of craftsmanship.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With Daffodil Weekend right around the corner, we have new Ready to Wear CPO Jackets coming soon to the website. Stay tuned.

Rantum Scooting, a term in old Nantucket dialect for a leisurely wander with no particular destination, also fittingly describes how we find ourselves moving through this Greek Revival home featured in “Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style”. With its layers of maritime and coastal-inspired collections — sailor’s valentines, walking sticks, gathered shells — displayed amongst beautiful New England-meets-California interiors, you could spend hours with every piece listening to the stories behind them. Longtime friends of the Looms, the homeowners have spent a lifetime accumulating objects with real history. You can feel that history in every room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This spread is one of our favorites in the book. We just love this seaman’s portrait, the gathered stand of ivory walking sticks against shiplap walls, and the open tattered ceilings in the dining room.
