Our family at Lancaster’s has always loved history…especially local history. It was always a treat when I taught and worked with other teachers to teach Arkansas history. This is a fun program. Get your students involved. In addition to their learning, you might learn something new too!

Lancaster’s Store was around during the last total solar eclipse in AR. G.D. Lancaster & Son (G.D. (D**k) Lancaster and C.K. (Knox) Lancaster were open for business in 1918 when the total eclipse occurred, but Stone County was far from the line of totality. The eclipse happened on June 8, 1918, and my grandfather, future owner of the family business, was born on July 3, 1918. For 4 generations back, the store never saw a total eclipse. Today is the day we get to see our solar eclipse in totality for 4 min. 14 sec. as Lancaster’s Generation Five. We hope to be opening in the future for the fifth generation of the original general store on the square which began 126 years ago. I know it has taken much longer than everyone expected, but there is only one of me. It is going to happen soon.

Yesterday, it was great visiting with the out of state visitors for the eclipse. They were looking forward to today. One told me they took busses, trains, and planes to get here. It is an exciting event, and I hope everyone is able to enjoy this day. My daddy would probably be enjoying a moon pie. I may too, but a big fish fry sounds like a fun way to enjoy an eclipse too. What are you doing to spend this day?
