I’ve been asked- what’s happening with the spur since Wolfgang Fix passing 😢.
I (Dawn Bennett) am the owner and wanted the spur for a long time.
However, I have agreed and offered my nephew Christian, half ownership as it means a lot to him as well. Continuing the legacy and bringing new memories that we all had, are very important to us as owners.
Many are new up here and don’t know the history of what was the Silver spur, then And now, Golden Spur.
It’s a historical story for sure that you can google.
Anyhow, my parents, Wolfgang and Mary Fix, bought it shortly after they moved up there in 2001.
It was a very successful, gas station, convenience store, propane, ice, event center, pool and bbq area.
Not only did it have these amazing features that entertained the community and senders employee parties, numerous receptions and birthday parties, it also had subdivisions stores, a candle store, the machine shop, the automotive shop, U-Haul and apartments that housed a few families that were locals since birth, it holds a place of memories of my 4 children and my niece and nephew that grew up on this store!
However, in 2015, it lost the battle in one of the largest fires, the butte fire. It has sat, alone and left with memories, since.
Every chance I got, as I lived in the east Bay Area, when my kids weren’t traveling for sports, we headed up to Grammy and papas on a Friday night!
We spent every holiday up here!
I’ve lived here as well, after the butte for for 19 months then again, from 2022-24, that last one, I started the spur market as I hated to see this burnt lot just rotting away, when there’s so many memories to have.
What’s for the future?
Christian and I, we don’t know but we both want more than ever, to re-build somewhat, of what was there.
With all the political nonsense, re-building seems impossible but many of you know me!
You know, I love a challenge but more importantly, love a legacy, history and maintaining roots!
I can’t promise anything but we are open to renting the lot out.
We are open to re-building one day (butte fire loans- wherever those have gone)
We’d love to rebuild and have sublease options but building, isnt a realistical nor feasible option right now.
We know another gas station is needed within the next two years.
We know, a pool bbq event center is needed to economically keep monies in Calaveras county.
We hear you!
But, as a community, we can utilize this lot somehow for the better just for now.
As a community, I ask as well as Christian, that you dont use it as dump site or homeless camp.
This lot, is my dads, hard work burnt to nothing! So, please respect that.
If you see something, please message me.
Thank you 🙏🏽
